I hated being confused. After ensuring Kyerra and Solana made it safely to their destination I called Mack to pick Sky up. She was currently lying across the couch in a liquor-induced coma. My heart ached, replaying her drunk rant. I wasn’t even sure she would remember everything she said in the morning, but I couldn’t forget.

Finally, the doorbell rang, and she didn’t even budge as I walked to the door.

“Wassup, Lo.” Mack greeted me, but I stepped outside and shut the door behind me. “Why are you grilling me like that?”

“You begged her for the truth. She gave it to you, and you’re still being a dick,” I fussed, hitting him in the arm. “What the hell?”

“What are you talking about?”

“You tell me. You and Sky talked, so why is she ranting about you still being mad at her.”

“You have to take that up with her.”

Refusing to let Mack deflect, I delivered, “I’m asking you,” sternly.

Mack didn’t like that. He liked giving orders and advice. Not being on the receiving end.

“I’m not mad at Sky,” he replied, but I could see why Sky didn’t believe that. I didn’t either.

“Then what is it, and please don’t bullshit me. I’ve been babysitting drunk women for hours. My patience is paper thin,” I warned.

Mack weighed his options briefly before taking a seat on the brick enclosure and letting out a sigh.

“I could never stay mad at Sky. Not over something like that but her Baby Daddy. That nigga played with me and mine for the last time.”

“What?”

“She said herself nobody has ever protected her. That’s my job now, and that nigga’s gotta pay for what he did. What he’s still doing when I told him to leave my family alone.”

“Mack,” I said in a sympathetic tone. “Do you really think that will make you feel better?”

“Won’t know until I try.” Nothing sobers you up faster than trying to talk your favorite out of murder. Not because Marcus deserved to be spared. He didn’t but killing him wouldn’t make Mack feel better. “Go ‘head and tell me that’s not the answer. How Cam may find out one day and how that’ll make her feel. Or how Sky will feel?”

“I’ve been telling you a lot of shit that you haven’t listened to lately. I’ll save my breath.”

“I’m much better at giving advice than taking it.”

“If this were Gianni, what would you say to him?” I posed, trying another angle. Mack thought for a second while I sat down next to him. “I’d tell him to stop acting like a bitch. Then he’d give me a look like he wants to kick my ass.”

“Then what?”

“I’d tell him to talk to you about it. Be honest and own it if that’s what he’s going to do,” Mack paused, then peered over at me. “But we both know Gi would kill anything or anyone that threatened your happiness, so none of that matters.”

“Protection isn’t always physical, Mack. Sky needs you emotionally. Not some grand gesture like killing Marcus.”

“So, what am I supposed to do? I told him to tread lightly. He ignored that using Cam to extort my wife,” Mack snarled, and I sighed trying to come up with anything to stop his rash decision because Gianni was relying on me. “Nobody protected her, right? I gotta start somewhere,”

“Are you really trying to protect her, or are your insecurities talking?”

“It’s principles, Lo. Every man has to stand on his. I went to Marcus man to man, so now he has to pay for that.”

I threw my hands up. “I just had to ask, but it’s cute when you get all protective and call her your wife.” I beamed because it was nothing sweeter than watching a black man confess his feelings.

“She gets on my fuckin’ nerves, but I’m not going anywhere, and her drunk ass should know that.”

“Drunk indeed. You’ve got my girl’s head fucked up, so go home and fix it, please.”

“How come you don’t sound drunk?”
