“I guess I have some work to do then.”

“Thank you. They’re beautiful.” She took them from my hand, admiring the array of vibrant colors. “Hey, we’re good, right?”

“How will you save the world if you don’t give that brain of yours a break?”

“I know you too, Macklen. I can tell when something is off.” Sitting on the edge of the bed, Sky was watching me, waiting for an answer, but I didn’t know how to say it without fucking her head up. “Is it about Cam going with Marcus today?” she probed.

“I don’t trust him.”

“Then she stays home,” Sky shrugged.

“I can’t do that to her. She’s looking forward to it.”

“It won’t kill her to hear no every now and then. It builds character,” Sky smiled, hoping I would return the gesture.

“Your ass doesn’t like hearing no.”

“I’m grown and have heard no enough to last a lifetime. She hasn’t, so it’s settled.”

“Depends,” I replied.

“On?”

“How you feel about me killing Marcus.”

Sky chuckled at first. I’m not sure if it was because she was nervous or she thought I was joking. My steadfast expression widened her eyes as she leaned in, ready to question what I meant.

“Knock, knock.” Adria knocked on the open door, announcing her presence. “Even though Sky isn’t speaking to me, I didn’t want to leave without saying bye.”

Sky was still poised in shock, so I nudged her toward Adria.

“Be safe, Mom.”

“Only if you promise to let yourself be happy. Truly happy, Skylar.”

“Thank you.” Sky willingly embraced her mother, which caught us both by surprise.

“Mack, can you take my bag downstairs?” Adria asked, reeling back her emotions from Sky’s gesture.

I grabbed her suitcase like she asked and marched downstairs with Adria trailing behind me. Sky didn’t join us because she was likely in our room having a fuckin’ panic attack.

“If you need anything, call me,” I insisted, dropping a stack of bills into the tote bag on her shoulder.

“So Skylar can kill me?” Adria chuckled.

“Like I said, if you need anything, you call me. I’ll handle Sky.”

“You’ve done more than enough.” Adria reached for my cheek and cupped it. “You’re a good man, Mack. Promise you’ll take care of my daughter. Do a better job than I did.”

“Yes, ma’am.”

Adria’s eyes drifted off, and it looked like she wanted to say more but focused back on me and smiled.

“Well, I’m off to my next adventure.”

“Don’t lose my number while you’re having fun.”

“Never.”
