Is he being serious?

“You want to dance with me?” I ask. “Really?”

My reluctance doesn’t faze the doctor.

“Come with me, Emma.”

From behind, his hand finds mine.

And then he’s firmly guiding me back into the penthouse. Back to the wide space of his open-plan living room. He leaves me standing in the middle as he strolls over to his sound system and puts on some slow, soulful music.

As it starts, August spins around to me and begins to dance. Well, if you can call it dancing - it’s more of an awkward shuffle. His shoulders rise and fall. His arms appear to move as if he’s skiing. His feet miss the beat with every step.

But August doesn’t seem to care in the slightest. He grins at me and my stony uncertainty with all the cheese in the world.

“You look ridiculous,” I remark.

August really doesn’t care.

“I think I look sexy,” he replies, continuing his little dance routine without a single fuck given.

He’s trying to get me to laugh, and he finally succeeds.

“Okay, you’ve got me,” I reply with a loud giggle escaping my lips.

August glides towards me, still trying to dance. I shake my head at his attempt.

“I can’t move like you,” he says.

“How about I show you?” I suggest as I raise up my arms to bring his body close to mine. I allow him to grip my waist as I loop around his tall, toned shoulders.

We soothingly sway to the soul music, slowly connecting through our movement. It’s tender and loving.

“Your serotonin levels increase when you touch your partner,” August says to me as we drift around the room. “Your life expectancy goes up, and your general well-being rises.”

“Is that so?” I ask.

“I am a medical professional, Emma. I know these things. Trust your doctor.”

“I trust you, August,” I reply. “It’s a good thing we’re touching, then.”

“You’re liking my touch?” he asks.

I move forward an inch and kiss his gorgeous neck.

“Always.”

“That’s all I needed to hear,” he whispers.

I need to ask him the question that’s been on my mind all day.

“Was what you said to your mother true? Do you love me?”

“It was the most true thing I have ever said,” August replies without hesitation. “You should really trust your doctor about that.”

“I don’t want to hear another word from you,” I whisper to him. “That’s all I needed to hear.”

And then I kiss him. And he kisses me back.
