I turn to August. He continues looking straight ahead, his hands on the controls, but with his trademark smirk plastered across his face.

“Yes,” he replies. “You might recall this island resort.”

“The same one?” I ask.

August nods, and the plane starts to descend.

“The same one,” he replies.

And it is so damn smooth.

I gently lie back on the couch, feeling the soft, cool leather against my skin, and I close my eyes.

This island resort is even better than I remember. We landed and were greeted by the friendly staff, just as we were last time. But, this time, it seems that August has booked an even larger villa than the one on my eighteenth.

The villa is nestled in the lush island greenery – a private sanctuary. A little pocket of the world for us to hide away in. Palm trees sway above the roof. We can see the blue ocean stretching into the horizon from the windows. There’s a garden and a pool out back, just beckoning me to dive in.

One moment, we were in the middle of a crazy city, and then we were here.

And it’s all because of Doctor Penmayne...

August is in the kitchen to put his phone on charge, leaving me to lie down here on the longest couch I’ve ever seen in my life to just finally...relax.

But I am suddenly brought back to reality by August.

He’s singing.

Wait... he’s singing Happy Birthday.

I spin around and open my eyes. August is standing above me - a cake topped with candles in his hands - and he is actuallysingingto me. His voice is low and is hitting all the wrong notes, but it’s so incredibly sweet that I can forgive his performance.

“Is that a cake?” I ask him in disbelief. “And candles?”

“Quickly, blow them out,” he tells me. “And make a wish.”

I do so.

“Thank you, August,” I whisper to him.

“What did you wish for?” he asks me.

“I’m not going to tell you,” I reply with a smirk. “You won’t squeeze a word from me, August.”

“Very funny.”

I take one big, indulgent bite of the cake.

“Holy crap, it’s delicious,” I tell August with a luxurious moan. The sugar ignites my senses. It isperfect.

The doctor takes a seat next to me on the couch and looks at me with his gorgeous eyes.

“I’ve got a serious question to ask you, Emma,” he says.

I swallow the piece of cake in my mouth and stare right back at him.
