“Just proving I’ve got my helicopter license,” he tells me.

I’m not bothered about his license when I’m, once again, simplyoverwhelmedby what August Penmayne is doing for me. Another surprise. Another gift.

I think his love language is gift-giving...

I can’t complain.

“Okay, where are you taking me to?” I ask him when we land at the airport.

August mimics zipping his lips shut.

“You won’t squeeze a word from me, Emma. It’s a surprise. You know how much I like surprising you.”

“Yes, you do.”

“So let me surprise you,” the doctor orders. “Sit back and let me do my thing.”

“Yes, doctor. Or should I say... captain?”

“That sounds good.”

He guides me from the helicopter across the airport tarmac to a waiting private jet.

Wow, the wealth of the Penmaynes knows no bounds.

The private jet is spacious and yet intimate.

“We’re flying somewhere else?” I ask August as I take my seat opposite him.

“Still no words from me,” he replies with his cheesy smirk. “Glass of champagne?”

“Don’t mind if I do.”

“I have to let you know that this private jet was arranged for and paid for by Mother,” August tells me. “She insisted you fly private for this.”

“Well, tell her thanks,” I reply. “Gosh, I never thought I would be friendly with Alda Penmayne.”

“She likes you,” August says. “She told me that. You’ve won her over.”

“Correction: she’s won me over.”

We fly a few hours to yet another airport; this one is a lot smaller and more remote than the city one.

“I’m guessing we’re near the coast,” I say to August as we disembark the private jet. “What’s this town?”

“Doesn’t matter,” he replies. “We’re not going to be here long. We’ve got one last flight to go on.”

“Oh, yeah?”

August points across the runway at another waiting plane. This time it’s a water plane.

“Yeah,” he says.

This one he pilots himself, and I am given flashbacks to my eighteenth birthday.

And my flashbacks become very real when I look out of the window down at the ocean - down at an island I very much remember.

“Wait... is that...”
