And my heart is currently winning the battle.

I gotta do something about it.

“I’ll clean the brothers’ bedrooms,” I tell Mom, nodding upstairs.

“You’re sure, Emma?” she asks me with a suspicious expression. “That’s a lot of work.”

“It’ll make things go a hell of a lot faster if we split up and you stay down here,” I reply. “Who knows, we might be able to half just a half-day of work, and you can relax this afternoon for once? Wouldn’t that be nice?”

“Okay, sounds like a good idea. Just give me a holla if you need help.”

“Will do, Mom.”

Okay, so I might haveulteriormotives as to insisting on cleaning the Penmayne brothers’ bedrooms, and it’s something I will never, ever dare reveal to the woman who raised me.

If she found out about this, then there would be hell to pay...

I head on upstairs and, when safely out of my Mom’s wandering eye, I gently open the door to August’s room. I’m grateful it’s unlocked. As I confidently predicted, the boy is lying on his bed reading a medical book.

“Another textbook?” I ask him as I enter. August shuts the book and grins at me.

“No rest for the wicked,” he replies, raising a curious eyebrow at my sudden entrance.

“How’s your study going?” I ask.

“Like walking through mud,” he replies, regarding me up and down. “And what brings you barging into my bedroom on this fine day, Emma Tucker?”

“Yes.”

That’s my one-word reply. August is perplexed. It doesn’t answer his question.

“Yes to what, Emma? What do you mean?”

“Yesto being your girlfriend, August.”

The boy silently throws the medical textbook to his side, leaps out of bed, quickly makes his way across the room toward me, and then – still without a single word spoken – kisses me passionately.

And, once again, I liquify into his tight embrace.

Once again, the entire world stops, and all that exists is this handsome boy with the irresistible bright blue eyes behind cute glasses kissing me.

All good things must die, and so does his passionate kiss. It lasts too short a time before August is looking deep into my eyes with his own piercing blue ones.

“That is all I’ve needed to hear,” he says.

“My mind’s made up,” I whisper back. “I don’t care about anything else to do with our families or our station in life. I just want you.”

“Do you know how much I’ve wanted you?” August asks me. “Do you even know how much I’ve desired you since I first saw you from the window?”

“I don’t,” I reply with a smirk. “You better tell me all about it and leave out no details.”

He kisses me again, and I can most certainly feel his desire upon his lips as he does so.

“There’s going to be so much time to tell you everything,” he says. “For now, let me kiss you.”

“Yeah, you can do that.”

This time, I’m pulling his face in for a long, lingering kiss.
