I can’t believe I’m doing this with this handsome, amazing human.

But every part of me is telling me that this is right. The mostrightI’ve ever felt about anything. Ever.

“I will never hurt you,” August says quietly. “Even if we are from different worlds and everything is conspiring to keep us apart. I want you to know that. I will never, everhurt you, Emma.”

“Yeah?”

My voice is weak and vulnerable again. I feel like I’m placing my heart in his hands now that I’ve saidyesto his proposal. He really could hurt me now. My defenseless soul is open to him, and I can’t bring it back, even if I tried.

“You’re my girlfriend now,” he says. “And I will never let you go, Emma. I will never let you be taken away from me. I promise.”

TWO YEARS LATER

EMMA

“Happy birthday, angel.”

That’s the cue for me to open my eyes and, when I do, I see the small cake in front of me. Lit candles and everything. It’s so sweet. I look up at Mom smiling expectantly at me.

“You made me a cake, Mom?”

“Yep.”

“You really shouldn’t have,” I exclaim. “You have work soon, and this would’ve surely taken up all your morning.”

“I wanted to make this for you, Emma,” she replies. “Now, go on, blow out those candles and make a wish before a fire starts.”

I take in a deep breath and blow. The candles extinguish and I lean over and give her a big hug. She hugs me back tightly.

“Thanks, Mom, for this. For being an amazing mother.”

“Sorry I can’t give you anything else for your birthday,” she whispers back. “Everything is so expensive at the moment. I could only afford this cake.”

“This cake is more than enough, Mom,” I reply. “And the ballet classes have been above and beyond anything I could wish for. I think you’re the best mom in the whole wide world.”

“And you’re the best daughter,” she says with a wink.

“Even with all my cursing?”

“Yes, even with your cursing.”

“I love you sodamnmuch,” I say.

“Okay, that’s enough cursing, Emma,” Mom replies, laughing. I like to see her laugh. “I’m happy you’re still enjoying those dance classes.”

“Of course I am. Dance is the best thing in the whole world. Well, apart from you.”

Two years of classes have flown by. Irina has been the most amazing teacher; I’ve genuinely soaked up a lot these past couple of years. I notice the improvement every single day. And I am still rocking those ballet shoes August gifted to me two years ago. There’s not been any horrible other incident like that since that shoe-break day two years ago.

As if the universe knows I’m thinking about the boy, my phone vibrates with a message from him. I check it as I take a bite of Mom’s homemade birthday cake.

Beautiful, come outside and wait by the outer wall. I’ve got a birthday present for you x

It’s been two years and our secret relationship has never been stronger than it is today. August and I have managed to hide our little affair from everyone else – my mom, his mom, his brothers and family, and even the mansion security. We’ve beensogood in our sneakiness, it’s kinda scary how good we’ve been. All our stolen moments together - all our creeping around the grounds of the estate. How happy these last two years have been – the happiest of my life.

We’ve met when we can.
