And I’ve not given August my virginity. Certainly nothing like that before I’m an adult. I know that’s something that will come when the mood and the vibe areright. And he’s, surprisingly, never pressured me into giving that to him. I like that about August; he wants me forme, not just my body. There aren’t a lot of teenage boys I’ve come to acquaint myself with you can say that about.

August has just been...astonishing. He’s studious, serious, polite, but honest to a fault. Not to mention the fact that he is, put simply, the most beautiful man I’ve ever seen. His glasses make him nerdy-cool, whilst his broad shoulders and perfect jawline make him gorgeous. Some days I want to pinch myself that he wants to be my boyfriend. I still think I’m living in a dream.

I look up from my phone.

“Mom, some friends at school have organized a sleepover for me,” I lie.

Look, I hate lying to Mom, but this isn’t anything bad. I’m just seeing August. Well, that’s how I justify it in my head.

“That’s nice,” she says. “I’m glad you’ve got good friends like that.”

Ouch, that hurts. I hate deceiving her.

“So I might be gone for a couple of days if that’s okay?”

“Fine with me,” she replies. “I’m going to be busy with work for the next few days anyway. Alda is organizing a big charity fundraiser, so she wants a full deep clean of the entirety of the mansion. It’s going to be a lot of effort.”

“Good luck with all that.”

“Yep. We’re gonna need it.”

I pack my things for whatever present August has got in mind and dart on out of the maid’s quarters. I wonder what this surprise is going to be - the boy doesn’t skimp on gifts for me, that’s for sure. He’s so thoughtful and loyal and smart. He knows how to make me dissolve with desire.

I sneak out through the Penmayne gardens in a way I know isn’t guarded as much as it should be. To live here is to get to know all the secret paths and nooks and crannies that come in handy when you want to sneak off to be with your forbidden boyfriend.

And there he is, just as he said he would be, by the outside wall of the mansion, far away from any prying eyes. He’s leaning against the wall like some kind of posing supermodel with that sexily tousled hair of his and that perfectly sculptured face hiding behind glasses. He looks so handsome with his rolled-up shirt revealing muscular forearms. Those cheekbones to die for. Those steely blue eyes that light up when he sees me skipping toward him.

“Hello, beautiful birthday woman,” he greets me with a cheeky grin.

“Hello, gorgeous man.”

“Are you ready for your surprise?” he asks.

I return an equally cheeky grin.

“Sure am.”

EMMA

August nods over to a luxury sports car parked down the road in front of the Penmayne mansion with a very proud look written plainly on his attractive face.

“What kind of birthday surprise are you talking about?” I ask him, curious as to what’s making him so pleased with himself.

He is looking so freaking pleased with himself that his head might explode from his ego.

August simply straightens his posture.

“Get in the car, Emma, and you’ll find out,” he says.

I tut.

“Oh, you love to be all mysterious, don’t you? Such a wannabe big shot.”

August smirks coyly. “Just get in my car, girl.”
