“Are you liking the mansion?” he asks me.

I glare at him.

“I’ve been a bit... busy cleaning up your literal crap to have an in-depth look around.”

The boy is completely unfazed by my snarky bite, and it’s disarming. I tend to have a sarcastic side that puts people off the minute they meet me, but clearly not August Penmayne. Instead, I seem to amuse him.

“Well, you should have a look around,” he replies. “It’s actually quite nice here... when the toilet doesn’t explode in your face.”

“I’ll keep that in mind.”

“Just don’t let my mother catch you,” he warns with a sly smile. “She’s not a fan of people snooping around.”

“I’d never snoop.”

“You should,” he says. “I like it. You can find out a lot about people that way. When they least expect it. My family has a lot of secrets that I’m sure you’ll love figuring out.”

“Have you been snooping on me?” I ask him. “I saw you in the window when I arrived. You do seem to have a consistent habit of turning up whenever I embarrass myself.”

August mimes locking his lips shut with a padlock and key.

“You enjoy that toilet cleaning, Emma,” he says. “I need to study.”

“You’re teasing me,” I retort with a groan.

“I’ll leave you to it, Emma Tucker,” the billionaire heir murmurs with his annoying sly smile. “No more teasing from me. Good luck with the restroom. Oh, and another helpful solution: I do believe you need a shower. Preferably a long and thorough one.”

“You’re so infuriating...”

August simply winks at me, turns, and walks away. Just like he did before when I first arrived. It’s so infuriating.

He leaves me standing here, all alone. Questioning myself.

I am not even a maid - I am adaughterof a maid. And I’ve got literal shit on my face.

So why the hell is August Penmayne taking such an interest in me?

EMMA

I am bored as hell.

I whistle, badly, to myself as I skip down the Penmayne mansion hallway, absentmindedly admiring the many paintings and portraits on the walls as I jostle past. Over the past few weeks, I’ve grown to really begin to comprehend how simplymassivethis building is, with its many rooms and hallways that you can easily get lost in.

There’s a hell of a lot to clean, that’s for sure.

But, for me today, I have done the cleaning tasks Mom has instructed me to do. Therefore leaving me with nothing to do. Therefore leaving me bored as hell.

But I love to explore. I love to sneak around. I love to see how the upper class of society lives.

This place is so damn big.

I might’ve told August that I don’t snoop, but that was a big fat lie. Of course I snoop. And right now, I’m in the mood for snooping around this crazy-ass mansion - I just don’t stalk random people like he so clearly likes to do.

I spot an open door down the hallway and decide, naughtily, to peek inside the room. Hey, I’m bored, and this might be something fascinating, so I can’t resist a look. It’s some guest suite done up all nicely - a neat, made-up bed and clean desk and open window looking out onto the mansion grounds. Nothing interesting going on in here.

Boring.
