The music for my dance starts to play over the auditorium loudspeakers that are onlyjusta tad better than my crappy little portable speaker.

I take in another deep breath.

You’re here, Emma. You’re finally here. And you’re about to achieve a tiny bit of your dreams that you’ve been waiting so long to achieve. Dreams that a week ago you’d thought was over.

And it’s all thanks to August. The doctor is sitting out there somewhere right now, waiting for me to perform for him.

Well, I can’t keep my audience waiting long.

And so, one more deep breath, and then I am stepping onto the stage.

AUGUST

Emma is so beautiful. I don’t need to be told twice, but she truly is.

I sit at the back of the giant theater auditorium and watch her as she dances. It’s just as I remember as when I saw her dancing for the first time.

She really is so fucking beautiful.

From here, I can watch her and see her properly - see her in the convulsion of her passion, her love, herjoy. And it is a sight to behold.

She’s talented. She’s even better than I expected or remembered. She’s just a natural on the stage. She looks so professional in her black leotard. She wasmadeto do ballet.

Her dancing takes me back. Like the kisses we have shared, her dancing transports me back to when we were teenagers sneaking around my family mansion, trying to keep our relationship a secret.

Those were the best years of my life. Everything I’ve done since is in a shadow of my time with Emma. I sometimes wish, foolishly, that I could go back in time to that moment when Mother found us at the airport and somehow change things. I would change it all in a heartbeat if it meant I could have Emma back.

If only I didn’t hurt her on that stupid day...

Watching her dance on the stage, I realize I would do anything for this girl in front of me.

Anything.

EMMA

I couldn’t see anything as I danced on the theatre stage. Well, I could see the first two rows of the auditorium, but anything else beyond that was in total darkness as the bright lights shone upon me as I moved and flowed to the beautiful music. Yep, I couldn’t see any further into the audience, but somehow I couldfeelAugust was watching me from inside the deep blackness of the theater.

I walk into the dressing room. It’s all over - I have danced on the stage I’ve dreamt about for years. I’ve achieved that big tick on the bucket list.

I take a seat opposite one of those stereotypical theater mirrors with the bare lightbulbs dotting around the frame and smile at my reflection.

You’ve done it, Emma. You can finally breathe again.

I was free on that stage, and it was magical. It felt like I was able to own a largespace– that I was no longer drowning in my fears and worries. I was, simply, a dancer again.

It felt like the first time I saw those gorgeous Swan Lake dancers on the screen.

There’s a knock on the door behind me. I spin around on the chair as August steps in.

“Hello,” he says to me with a grin.

“Hello,” I reply back with an equally big grin.

“Emma,” he says quietly, “that wasenchanting.”
