I glance back at August. He’s still standing by the door with a mischievous look.

And, to top it off, he winks at me.

He’s up to something...

“I’ve got someone else here to see you,” he says. “Someone else who was in the audience. Someone else who has asked to see you.”

I blink. I’m so confused.

How many people were actually in the freaking audience today?

“Who?” I ask.

He merely steps aside to let the man through.

Kenneth Thompson steps next to August in the dressing room doorway and nods at me.

What?

“Hello,” I say to the judge from my dance school audition.

“Hello, Emma,” he replies slowly.

“What are you doing here?” I ask him. “Did August rope you here as well?”

“I’m afraid so,” he replies. “I know the Penmaynes well, and August is a hard man to say no to.”

“He most certainly is,” I agree, shooting the doctor a vicious glare. August merely smirks back.

“You never did turn up to that second audition,” Kenneth tells me. “That was disappointing. We were waiting for you.”

“I know,” I reply. “I’m sorry to let you down like that. I really wanted to come, but...lifehas gotten in the way. Things became impossible, and I just... ran away. I’m sorry.”

“Ah,life,” Kenneth remarks knowingly. “It always seems to find a way to try to become an obstacle in the path of our dreams. Trust me, I have had first-hand experience of that.”

“Well, it’s certainly got in the way of mine,” I say.

Kenneth smiles.

“But I must say I very much enjoyed your performance here today,” he says.

“You did?” I ask sincerely.

“I did,” Kenneth replies. “In fact, I was impressed, and I am rarely impressed, Emma, so well done. I am actually impressed enough that I’ve already made a few phone calls, and we would like to skip the whole audition process and offer you a place at the school.”

My jaw nearly hits the floor.

“You didn’t just say that?” I ask in total shock.

Kenneth lets out a small chuckle.

“And don’t you dare think it’s because I know August Penmayne. Trust me, I would love to saynoto a Penmayne, I really would. But you are just so talented that I think I have to bow down to the facts here.”

“You really didn’t just say that?” I ask. “You’re really offering me a place?”

“I did,” the judge replies with a smile. “And I’ll leave you alone to process that. Get back to me if life gets out of your way, okay? We’ll get in contact with you in a few days to sort out the details.”

“Thank you,” I stutter. “Thank you, thank you.”
