"Good morning, I was sent by the Editor-in-chief to take back the article you lent him this morning. I am Mr. De...''I paused for a while when I noticed who I was face to face with. The love of my life, the most beautiful woman I have ever set my eyes on. I lost consciousness as I continued to stare at her. No! No! No! Get it together, Derrick! You can't show this woman you have fallen for her-at least not yet.

"You must be Derrick,'' she finally spoke up. “I am Kathy. Kathy Cruz,” she said, standing up from the office chair she was sitting on with her hands stretched out for a handshake. I walked closer to her, still trembling, and I received a handshake. I was still waiting for words to come out of my mouth when she asked if I was alright?

"Yes, I am very fine, thank you. I am just here for the article, please,” I finally said.

"Oh yes! Sorry, you had to come all the way here for it. I just borrowed it to do some research today. Here, you can have it." She stretched it out to me, and I received it.

"It's fine, Ms. Kathy. I understand. Thanks for letting me have it. Have a nice day," I said as I turned to leave the office. I was almost out when I heard "Have a nice day, too, Mr. Derrick," coming from her. That was my first encounter with Kathy, and I saw more of her as I came to the faculty. We became very good friends, and I have always enjoyed every bit of our time together. She knows very well how to keep someone company. And today, I was taking her out for lunch, I wasn't too sure what to expect, but I hope it all goes down well, including the main purpose for which we were going out – Mr. Williams. I was to go pick her up at her office by 2 pm this afternoon. I checked my wristwatch and saw that it was already 1 pm. I was already dressed when I heard a knock on the door.

"Who is it?" I wondered who it was that was about to spoil my afternoon.

"This is the UK police. Open up,” a voice came from outside. Police? Why will the police be at my house by this time of the day? Oh no! What do they want from me? They are just about to spoil this glorious afternoon with Kathy. I opened the door and found three police officers, including Officer Smith, standing outside.

"Good afternoon, Officers. To what do I owe this visit?”

"Good afternoon, Mr. Derrick. Sorry for bothering you by this time of the day, but you may have to come with us to the station for questioning. We heard some reports concerning a kidnapping event, and you happened to be one of the victims.”

"Oh, but as you can see, I'm all dressed up to go out. So, what do we do about that?"

"We promise not to take so much of your time, Mr. Derrick. We will be as fast as possible."

"Alright then. If you say so, we can go now." I was surprised the police got to find out about the kidnap. Does that mean Mr. Williams is in trouble already? I wondered what kind of questions they were going to ask me, and I hoped I would still be able to meet up with the time I had planned to be Kathy. I was asked to come to join them in their patrol car, but I insisted on taking my car to the station. After much argument, they finally agreed but warned me not to try anything funny and that a Police officer must be with me in my car. I agreed, and then we moved. It was a short and silent drive to the station. It took us less than 15 mins to get to the station. Officer Smith invited me to his office when we finally entered the station.

"Mr. Derrick,” he started. “Once again, I apologize for the inconveniences this must have caused you. But I'm surprised at the fact you, as an investigator, could not report to the police when this unfortunate incident occurred. These people who perform this evil act are criminals and deserve to be punished by the law. So, my first question to you now is why did you decide to keep this situation away from the police? Why not come report to us immediately you were set free?"

"Officer Smith," I said, looking directly into his eyes. “First of all, I was not freed. I escaped, and to be honest with you, they were not just ordinary kidnappers seeking ransom; they were intentionally after my life, and as an investigator, I felt I could handle the situation all by myself, and that's why I didn't bother coming to the police for help,” I told him confidently. We spoke at length, but I was glad I was able to answer all his questions correctly and to a great extent satisfactorily. He promised not to take much of my time, but when I glanced at my watch at the end of the session, it was already a few minutes to the hour of 4. I felt very bad for disappointing Kathy. I checked my phone to see if there were any missed calls from her, but I found none. I hoped everything was okay with her.

“Thank you for your time, Mr. Derrick. I want to assure you that the police department is with you in this situation. Just make sure to let us know if there are any new developments.”

“Sure thing Officer Smith. You’re welcome.” We shook hands, and I made my way out of his office, heading towards my car. I sent a text to Kathy immediately after I got to my car. “HeyKathy, I am so sorry for not meeting up with you today. Something quite important took my time. I’ll make it up to you and explain all that happened today when we next meet. I hope you had a nice day at the office today; enjoy the rest of your days.”

I read through the text for a second time before I hit the send button. I drove back home feeling a little protected now that I had the backing of the police. I just have to tell Kathy in detail about all these recent happenings and then seek her advice. I believed taking down Mr. Williams, and all those involved in my kidnap should be an easy task – or so I thought.

Chapter Five

Will/Wes

I looked up at the square-shaped clock that hung on the wall; the time was exactly 7:25 pm. I knew it was finally time to meet Wes. I became a little anxious as I was about to leave. I knew this wasn't going to be the end of me; at least I was fully armed just in case he was going to attack; I would be able to defend myself, but what did Wes and his boss have in mind for me? "It will all soon be over, Will," I told myself as I made my way to Hilltop Downtown.

It was 7:35 pm already, and Will had not yet arrived. Does that mean he took the option? Did he want war? Will he prefer to put the life of Kathy and his unborn child in danger? I wondered. I know I do not believe in anything that has to do with love, but I was sure that if I ever fell in love, I would protect that person with all of my strength. I would never want any harm to befall the person. Isn't that how love is supposed to be? So why is Will not here yet? If that's the case, he probably thinks he can fight anyone that dares trespass his territory, I chuckled. That might not be the case this time if he doesn't show up here today. I can't assure him of Kathy's life. As I was still lost in thoughts, I heard footsteps approaching. The hilltop was a story building. There was enough lightning downstairs, unlike upstairs, which was pitch dark. I listened quietly and watched who was approaching. I saw Will approaching.

"Don't move an inch," I said in a commanding tone. He looked up, trying to see where the voice was coming from. I knew he would not be able to see who was speaking, but he was supposed to know who it was through my voice.

"Are you alone?" I asked to be sure.

"Yes, I am. Show yourself," he replied so confidently. I came downstairs to talk with the one I had been searching for over three months.

"Hey, Will Carter. It's been a very long while. I didn't expect you to come considering the kind of personality you have. This certainly shows how much you care about your loved ones. I am not here to do you any harm. I want us to talk like mature men,” I told him. We gave each other a space while we spoke.

"What do you want from me, Wes?" I asked impatiently. Wes had not changed a bit. He was still cool-headed and crafty as he had always been. I wasn't interested in whatever he was talking about. I just wanted to know why he had invited me over to this place.

"I had always known you to be a very impatient man. Anyway, now that you are here and it seems like you are not ready for pleasantries let's get straight to business. I called you here to let you know that for the past five years since we separated, we have been spying on you and even your private life. We know you are most likely the only one that knows more than enough about the secret business that my boss and his entire staff, including me, are operating. So, I'm here on behalf of myself and my boss to strike a deal with you."

"And what is this deal you are talking about?" I said, looking confused.

"Relax, Will. That is exactly what I am about to say. This isn't like a threat. I just want to let you know that for as long as you know much about our secret business, my boss and I agreed that we might not be able to assure you of the safety of the lives of Kathy, your unborn child, and any other loved one of yours. So, you are strongly advised to stay clear of any matter related to our secret business for sale of your loved ones," I said in a very assuring and more serious tone.

"What do you mean by my unborn child?" I was more confused now than ever. What could Wes possibly mean about my unborn child? Could it be that Kathy is pregnant? No, that can't be possible. But what if she's pregnant? Why would she hide such a thing from me?
