But since I can do at least that—can make one fucking phone call—I take it from her and pull up the contact for the doctor’s office.

Both of the Plantains watch as I hit the button to call, as I listen to it ring and ring, as I leave a message and ask for the office to call me back as soon as possible.

Then I hang up.

Turn back to Brit.

“I fucked up.”

She jerks, voice breaking. “Yes, you did.”

And then she’s collapsing.

I move toward her, catching her before she can hit the floor.

Her sobs are…

Terrible.

Worse than hearing my diagnosis from the doctor.

Worse than watching my daughter get wheeled into surgery.

Worse than worrying I was going to lose my mom.

Because…

This is the woman I love.

And…I did this.

The door closes with a quiet click and I look up to see that Dan’s finally left.

That it’s just Brit and me.

It’s just me and the woman I hurt.

It’s just me and this hell that I put her through.

It’s just me and?—

She shoves out of my arms, jumps to her feet. “You have cancer,” she says, thrusting a hand through her hair, sending her ponytail scattering, fingers clenching at the locks. “You have cancer and you lied to me.”

“I…”

But I peter out.

Because…

She’s not wrong.

“All these months of blaming myself,” she whispers, turning away from me. “All this time—” A shake of her head. “Tiffany.”

“She wasn’t anything more than a friend, than the woman who was looking after Roxie,” I say. “You know she wasn’t?—”

Brit turns back. “I know.”

I inhale. “I love you,” I say, reaching for her. “I’ve always loved you. There’s never been another woman, not since I saw you in the parking lot all those years ago.”
