Page 22 of Teasing You

“And I was really in the mood for pub food and didn’t want to cook, so I figured we could share,” Billie added as she put the bags down on the table. “You haven’t eaten yet, have you?”

Shutting the door, she shook her head. “Nope. I was sitting here thinking about all the info Marissa gave us and then I got comfortable on the couch and was too lazy to get up and make anything. So…thank you. Now I don’t have to.” She hugged them both before going into the kitchen. “Do we want to do water, soda, beer, or wine?”

“Ooh…wine!” Chloe said.

That was odd.

Poking her head out of the kitchen, she looked at her sister. “Isn’t this a school night? Should you be drinking wine?”

Waving her off, she said, “Don’t be ridiculous. I can have a glass of wine with dinner if I want to. It’s not a big deal.”

“Alrighty…same for you, Billie?” she asked as she picked up the bottle of merlot she’d been saving for…anything.

But her older sister was frowning as she stared at her phone. “Um…none for me,” she said distractedly. With a loud and drawn-out sigh, she looked up. “I hate to do this, but I’ve got to go.”

“What? But you just got here,” Ashlynn huffed. “What’s going on?”

“The oven at the coffee shop was giving us trouble today, and Curtis just texted that something keeps beeping on it. Ugh…rain check?”

“Of course, but…do you want to take some of this for yourself? I mean…I know Chloe and I can’t eat it all.”

“Actually, I need to go with her,” Chloe said as she picked her purse back up.

“What? Why?”

“I rode here with her and my car’s at Books & Beans,” her twin reasoned.

“So? I’ll drive you back over after we eat. You don’t have to go!”

“I’ll see you tomorrow, Ash!” Billie called out as she rushed out the door.

Chloe, however, came over and gave her a fierce hug. “Don’t be mad at us. We just worry about you.”

“Okay, but…”

She was talking to no one because Chloe ran out the door and closed it behind her.

“What the hell was that all about?” she murmured, still holding the bottle of wine in her hand.

Then she realized what had happened; they were worried about her finances and wanted to bring her food without making it obvious by bringing over groceries.

“Aww…now that’s kind of sweet.” She paused. “Dammit.” It bugged her that she was in a position where they needed to do something like this. Still, she would have to thank them both tomorrow. Tonight, she’d let them suffer and wonder if she was still standing here in confusion or cursing them out for running out on her like that.

Just thinking of them wondering made her smile.

“Serves them right.”

Putting the wine down on the kitchen table, she opened the first bag of food and inhaled deeply. “Ooh…that smells like meatloaf! Yum!” She pulled out several Styrofoam containers and couldn’t wait to see what else her sisters had ordered. There were two bags of food, and it was going to be nice not to have to cook for a few nights.

Deciding to eat in front of the TV, she was about to get one of the snack trays out when there was a knock on the door.

Chloe.

It had to be Chloe.

Her sister probably felt guilty and came back to eat with her.

I love her…
