Haidyn’s golden head peeked out of a recessed doorway. An inquisitive smile quirked his lips, and he stepped out and approached.

“The werewolf is here somewhere,” I immediately informed him.

“Here?” he asked, his grin dissolving as his gaze darted around the crowded market. “Where? You saw it?”

“No. That’s what is strange. I can’t pick it out.”

Haidyn’s brows nearly hit his hairline.

“Exactly.”

He and I spent an hour wandering the busy area before the scent vanished. Neither of us was able to pinpoint where it was.

We returned to my residence, and he dropped to the padded bench in the main room. I took the one opposite him.

“What do you want to do?” he asked.

We’d already had a gathering of my inner circle to inform them of what had happened. But three weeks had gone by and there had been no sign of the werewolf since. It wouldn’t be in werewolf form until the next full moon, but we should’ve been able to see it. Now I knew it was working with another creature.

“We need to let the others know what we suspect. Call them together tonight.”

He nodded.

We both looked toward the guest room opening.

My lungs seized at the vision that approached. Aurora had bewitched me and if I didn’t know better, I would’ve thought she was just that—a witch.

“Haidyn,” she greeted with a warm tilt of her full lips. She sent an indifferent glance my way. Though she shared my bed at night, she chose to spend most of her free time in the guest room. I knew she did it to spite me, and I’d allowed it. But I was just about done with her behavior.

My palm itched to redden her ass.

A growl rumbled low in my chest when he stood up and kissed her hand. His amused gaze shot my way, and I gave him a warning glare. As he straightened, he chuckled.

“News of my family?” she asked him. Neither of us had told her that they hadn’t even grieved what they thought was her death. From what we could find, there had been no debt that couldn’t be paid. It seemed that they had traded their eldest daughter for political and monetary gain.

“They are well,” he assured her.

For now, was left unsaid.

What they had done to her enraged me, yet I had them to thank for her being here. If they hadn’t done what they’d done, she might never have crossed my path.

“Well, I must be on my way,” Haidyn announced. “It was lovely to see you again, Aurora.”

Her cheeks flushed a becoming shade of pink, and my annoyance spiked. Haidyn’s reply to what he knew was my irritation, was a wicked grin.

“Fuck off.”

He laughed and took his leave.

Aurora approached me and sat in my lap. I cocked a brow in surprise.

“Careful, you might make me think you actually like me now.”

She pursed her lips in an attempt to hide her smile. Finally, she lost the battle. Her mouth curled up at the corners and she trailed a nail along the collar of my tunic. “Maybe I like you a little. I mean, I like the things you do to me.”

My hand found her thigh through the high slit in her gown. “Is that so?”

“Maybe.”
