“Mmm,” I hummed as I leaned closer and dragged the tip of my nose along her jaw. “Then what do you say I do some of those things?”

Playfully, I nipped her shoulder.

“Please,” she whispered.

I gripped her hips and lifted her to straddle me. She reached between us and moved the fabric that separated us. Then she got to her knees and lined me up to her very wet slit.

“Damn. Was someone thinking about me?” I asked through gritted teeth as she worked her way down until she had taken me fully into her tight sheath. Her lips were parted, and her amber eyes were heavy-lidded as they locked on mine.

“Yes,” she breathed as she started to move. “But don’t let it go to your head. This is still just fucking.”

I groaned and dug my fingertips into her ample curves as I thrust up into her welcoming heat. “Of course,” I agreed.

As I lost myself in the sensations, nothing around us mattered. The only sounds I heard were our ragged breaths. The only thing I was aware of was the way our bodies fit together. The only thing that mattered was making her come.

Her nails scored the back of my neck.

I bruised her golden flesh with my hands and teeth.

The little sounds she made that I loved so much were music to my ears.

“Oh gods,” she whimpered.

“No gods are responsible for how you feel. It’s nothing but pure darkness, lust, and my cock. Now be my good girl and come for me.” Without any conscious thoughts of calling them, I noticed my shadows snaked closer and swirled around my legs. They twisted and licked up to tease along where she and I came together.

She buried her face in my neck as she whined, and her perfect little cunt squeezed my dick. The smoky wisps wrapped around us, enveloping us into a cocoon of smoky shadows.

Despite what she’d said, something seemed to shift between us. I tightened my hold as she tensed and gasped.

When we came together, I was certain my chest split open and my black heart fell at her feet.

Six Months Later

We said our goodbyes and left Theron’s house, where we’d been having dinner. Theron was a member of my inner circle, and I trusted him almost as much as Haidyn. We took a leisurely stroll past the market, where everything was closed up for the night.

It was after dark; therefore, we could move about the city without attracting much notice. We were a wealthy man and his woman in her cloak with the hood up against the cool night air.

There was the rare pickpocket that thought they had an easy target, but they didn’t know who they were messing with. There had been no further run-ins with the werewolf. I was beginning to think it had moved on.

“When will you leave Roma?” Aurora asked as she looped her arm through mine, and I placed my opposite hand over where hers rested on my forearm. Her tone was somber as I’d told her I was leaving soon.

I’d decided to relocate my newly formed Archontes to Narbo. Now that we had established ourselves, I wanted to be a little farther from the politics of Rome.

I stopped and faced her. She tilted her head back to look up at me, and the moonlight fell over her cheeks. The glisten of tears in her honey-colored eyes made my chest ache. It was an unusual feeling for me, but one she invoked more often than I would’ve ever thought possible.

“I want you to come with me,” I murmured, tucking a stray curl behind her ear beneath her hood.

“But… you said our time would be done when you left,” she replied, her brow furrowed in confusion.

“I know what I said.” Because I didn’t think I could bear to have her age when I stayed the same, I’d made the decision to leave her behind. I’d be ending things on my terms, no one and nothing else’s. But now that the time to leave was drawing near, I couldn’t bear the thought of losing her yet. I’d actually been debating doing something I’d never in a million years have thought I would do.

Take a mate.

Something nearly unheard of in the demon world.

Hope flared to life in her gaze.

“Would you like to see the world with me?” I asked her. Most humans had no idea how vast the world was and would never see half of it in their lifetime. As the king of the demons, so to speak, I’d seen more of the world than most could comprehend. Then again, traveling from world to world was different for me than it was for them.
