I reach my hand out to her, remembering that I need to keep this professional. No matter how damn turned on she makes me.

“I am,” she hesitatingly reciprocates, and when she takes my hand in hers, I want her even more. I shouldn’t be thinking about my daughter’s friend like this. “Theo Kincaid.”

“Tessa Jones. Nice to meet you,” she says all this, not able to look me in the eyes. I know she’s still pissed about her job, not that I can blame her. But I know her first paycheck from me will be more than enough to make up for it.

Her and Court just moved into a shitty little apartment a couple weeks ago. I offered to buy them a house to live in, but my daughter is stubborn and refused to let me help her. The least I could do was give her friend a job. I’m proud of the independent woman she is becoming, but I wish she’d let me do more for her. She’s my only child, and I hate the thought of her growing up and not needing me anymore. Her mother is a witch and has pretty much cut all ties with her, so I’ve tried to make up for that.

“Come on back to my office.” I nod toward the hallway, and when I look back at her, the look on her face tells me she’s unsure about what she should do.

I start toward my door, and she follows me. Once we make it to my office, I hold the door open for her and point at one of the empty chairs across from my desk.

“Have a seat.” She does as requested, her back ramrod straight, and I can tell this is the last place she wants to be right now.

I take my seat across from her, resting my leg across the other.

“Courtney told me you’re in need of a job.” As soon as the words are out of my mouth, I feel like a dick. Of course, she needs a job, dumbass.

She flinches. “I believe you’re to blame for that.” Her cheeks tinge pink when she says that. I know she’s embarrassed, but I think it’s damn adorable. She acts shy, but I can tell she’s got some sass under there somewhere.

I uncross my legs and lean on my desk with my elbows.

“I am, and I apologize. But I’d like to make up for that and offer you a job here at Kincaid & McAlister.”

She tilts her head to the side, eying me like she can’t believe what I just said.

“Just like that? You’re not even going to interview me? Don’t you have any other candidates that are more qualified?”

“Possibly, but Paulette will train you. The work isn’t difficult.”

“Are you doing this because I’m Court’s friend?” I’m not sure why she’s trying to talk me out of this, but I decide to play along with her.

“Nah, I mostly just feel bad that I got you fired.” I smirk at her, and she glares at me in response.

She crosses her arms over her chest defiantly, her tits pushing up, and it’s taking everything in me not to stare at them.

“I don’t need a pity job, Mr. Kincaid.”

“Okay.” I pick up my desk phone and start to press the keys. “I’ll let Paulette know we need to contact the next applicant.” Two can play her game.

“Wait!” She puts her hand up in the air to stop me. “If you’re really sure, I’ll take it.”

I smile mischievously. “I knew you’d come around.”

She sits back in her chair. “I don’t like handouts, Mr. Kincaid.”

“That’s good, because I wasn’t planning on giving you any. You’ll work for anything you earn around here.”

Her cheeks flush again, and I know she’s attracted to me too. We’re definitely on the same page.

“Good. When can I start?”

“You’re already here, so how about now?”

“Okay. Thank you. I really do appreciate you helping me.”

“Don’t let me down, Ms. Jones.” I pause, “I know you’re my daughter’s friend, but my business is important to me.”

“I understand.”
