“As long as you can learn quickly and show up, I don’t think we’ll have a problem.” I look at my calendar on my desk, seeing the reminder about the Callahan case we just got. I know I shouldn’t ask her this, but she’s my new assistant, and it’s part of the job. At least, that’s what I tell myself.

“Sure thing,” she says in her sweet, sultry voice. I know she’s not trying to sound sexy, but she does anyway.

I lean forward on my desk again, “Paulette will train you during the day, but in the evenings, I’m going to need you to stay late. Probably for a couple weeks. We have a new case we just got this morning, and I’m going to need all the help I can get with it.”

“Whatever you need. I just appreciate a job.”

“You’ll be paid overtime for all the extra hours. We treat our employees very fairly.”

And I’m looking forward to spending all the time I can with her. I know it’s wrong, but I want Tessa Jones.

CHAPTER THREE

TESSA

What are the freaking chances? I wanted to run for the hills when I saw him, but I decided to suck it up because I need a job, thanks to him. Okay, so I probably shouldn’t have put his coffee in front of him when he was clearly upset, but I didn’t expect him to act like a toddler either.

When I got home after my first day, I told Courtney all about it. Well, I left out the part about her dad being the one who got me fired from McGuire’s. It’s not like it’s some big secret, but maybe it’s the fact that I hadn’t been able to get him out of my mind. I feel guilty for having inappropriate thoughts about my best friend’s dad. Not that anything would ever come of them. He’s way out of my league, and I’m way too young for him. And he’s way too married for me, and I’d never mess with a married man.

Today is my second day on the job. I have to admit, I think I’m going to enjoy it a lot more than I originally thought I would. Even with zero experience, I seem to be catching on quickly, and Paulette has already taught me a lot. She’s just left for the day, and I’m nervously stalling before I head back to Mr. Kincaid’s office. I don’t know how late I’m going to have to stay tonight, but the thought of being alone with him is doing weird things to me.

I go to the coffee machine, quickly making two cups and then make my way back to his office.

“Coffee?” I ask from his opened door.

He looks up from his computer and smiles. “I already know I made the right decision hiring you.”

My cheeks heat at his words. He’s not flirting, but anytime he says anything to me, I feel like a teenager swooning over her first crush.

I set the cup down on his desk, and he looks up at me. “Thanks for not spilling it on me.”

My mouth gapes open. “Thank you for not acting like a two-year-old.”

He throws his head back in a laugh, and the sound does weird things to me.

“In all seriousness, is your leg okay?”

I realize, I never asked him that at the diner. As soon as everything happened, I got called back to the office because my boss was pissed that I spilled a hot drink on one of the richest men in Boston.

He pats his leg and cringes. “Third degree burn, but I should survive.”

“Haha. You’re hilarious.”

He spends the next hour explaining to me everything he’ll need me to do. The work is easy enough, and he makes being here all day bearable.

He stands from his desk and raises his arms above his head in a stretch.

“Hope you’re hungry. I ordered Chinese, and it’ll be here any minute.”

I look up from the file I’ve been looking over. It’s hard to concentrate around this man, but I need to keep this job, so I’ve been trying the best I can.

“Oh, um, thanks. But you don’t have to feed me.”

Shit. That probably sounded way worse than I intended it to. And if the smirk on his face is any indication, I’m right. This man is a goddamn flirt, and if I’m not careful, I could get myself into a lot of trouble with him. I have to keep reminding myself how off limits he is.

“It would be my pleasure to feed you.” He winks and makes his way out of his office when he gets an alert on his phone.

I stand and pace his office, scrubbing a hand over my face in frustration. This is bad. So very bad. I need to tell him we need to keep this professional for obvious reasons, but first and foremost, because I need this job. If I don’t have a job, I’ll have to move back to the Midwest, and I really don’t want to leave Boston. As much as I love my family, this is my home now. Boston is where I see my future, but if I can’t afford to stay here, I’ll be forced to leave. I love Courtney like a sister, but I refuse to let her pay my half of our rent.
