Laughing, he sat down on his sleeping bag, then leaned over to kiss her. “Don’t worry, you can look after me tonight.”

This reeked of a setup. “Did you organize this?”

“You know I did.”

“I mean this private hideaway.”

“Wish I’d thought of it,” he said, but there was no missing the slight upward turn of his lips. God, he was such a delicious rogue.

“Okay, I’m going to the bathroom. Back soon.”

A couple of minutes later she returned only to find the spot where she’d left her sleeping bag empty. A strong arm encircled her from behind. “Come on, I found us somewhere else to hide out.”

“But Willa?—”

“Is okay. Addie and Isobel will take care of her.” He took her hand and led her to another place, hidden away under an arch with fun butterfly art above them. He had zipped their sleeping bags together. “This way we can have a little space for us.”

For us. It sounded lovely. “Can I have a second?”

“Sure.”

She headed back to the other room and through the entryway to the bunk-down spot.

“Willa?”

“Mom?”

Her daughter was snuggled up in her sleeping bag, Kindle in hand, with Addie on one side and Giselle, one of Harper Chase’s daughters, on the other.

“Just checking you’re okay.”

“I’m fine.” She sounded a little embarrassed. So soon? “Are you okay?”

No. “Perfect. I’ll be next door. Well, the next room over, so let me know if you need anything, okay?” She smiled at Addison. “Thanks for taking care of her.”

“Not a problem. Go get some rest.” Ashley didn’t imagine the implied snigger in her tone.

“Night, Mom!” Clearly anxious to get rid of her.

“I’m going,” she grumbled.

She returned to where Dex had set up their sleeping bags. He was already inside the quilted pocket, and he looked up, his brow furrowed. “Everything okay?”

“Yeah, she clearly doesn’t want me around.”

“That’s not true. She’s just flexing her independence muscles in a safe space.”

That sounded awfully wise. “Any room in there for a sad, unwanted mom type?”

“I think I can fit you in.”

He pulled back the cover, inviting her into his web, and she snuggled in beside him as they adjusted their legs and found a way to puzzle-piece their bodies together. A little like what they were doing as a couple.

Because there was no doubt that’s what they were becoming.

She faced him and drank him in, in all his handsome glory.

“You’re exceptionally good-looking, you know that? Of course you know that. How could you look in the mirror and not know that?”
