He looked her in the eyes finally, andsuddenly she knew.

The effect of his arrow wasgone. For both of them.

Chapter 14

He’d known.

Chance had known the secondhe’d been struck with his own arrow. Of course, he knew all therules. Drawing of blood, of either party struck by the arrow, cancelled out all effects. Not a little blood, but a lot. Enough tokill a man, which was why he hadn’t brought it up as an option whenthey’d first been struck.

He was damn lucky to havehad a powerful warlock right there to keep him from dying. Hehadn’t really been joking when he’d said that. Also, yeah, he’dbeen stalling. Not wanting to know it was all over. He’d neededmore time to win her, to convince her love was worth tryingfor.

He stared at Elodie, watching the comprehension dawn in her widening eyes.

“The connection is gone,”she whispered. Not a question.

“Yes.”

“I—” She shook her headonce, then her expression blanked, concealing the rest of anyreaction she might be feeling from him. “I see.”

What did she mean by that?

Alasdair held out a handand they both gained their feet, Elodie rising at the same time.“We need to get inside where it’s warm and figure out our nextsteps.”

Inside the cabin, theylooked around. While the fire was crackling cheerfully, and variousoil lamps added a warm glow, and the place was neat and tidy, italso clearly wasn’t lived in. The furniture was pretty basic. Nofood in the cupboards or fridge. No personal items of anykind.

“What is this place?”Delilah demanded of the young witch. They still didn’t know hername.

She shrugged, expressionturning petulant. “A safe house for Cretan’s people when needed.I’d never been here until tonight.”

Without his anti-lovearrow, she probably wouldn’t be talking. At least they hadthat.

“Why were you here?” Chanceasked.

“I may not love him now.”The glance she flicked in Chance’s direction was both resentful andawed. “But I won’t hurt him either.”

“He didn’t love you,”Chance said, earning a scowl from the girl.

“How would youknow?”

“I’m a cupid. A god oflove. My arrow wouldn’t have broken your connection unless the lovewas weak. But I can tell you, as long as I’ve been doing this, I’veseen it all. He was pretending to love you. He needed yourmagic.”

Out of the corner of hiseye, he caught the way Elodie slowly turned her head his direction.Studying him.

“He needed my help to killthe siren who killed his brother,” the witch spat, throwing anaccusing finger Elodie’s direction. “I know. He told me everything, and she deserves to die.”

Elodie stiffened, but her answer was quiet.“His brother had killed twelve women by the time I came acrosshim.”

Chance jerked his gaze toher. She hadn’t mentioned that part before. Twelve women? Heshuddered.

So did the witch. “How doyou know that?” she whispered.

The glance Elodie sent hisway was wary before she answered. “If I put my hand over someone’sheart and look deep into their eyes I can…compel them.”

The moment flying andarguing. His heart turned to lead. He’d thought she was trustinghim, but she’d just been compelling him?

“They confess things. It’show I make sure I’m killing someone who deserves it.”

Another glance hisdirection. Inscrutable, but Chance was too disappointed to decipherit anyway.
