“How did he kill them?” thewitch asked, as if compelled by Elodie to know the worst. Or thetruth at least.

“Tavros preferred to gutthem with his horns. Got off on it too.” Elodie wasn’t pulling herpunches. “And the aura around Cretan…if he hasn’t done similar, itwon’t be long.”

The witch blanched.

“Where did you send him?”Elodie asked, still speaking softly. Gently even. As if shecommiserated with the young, foolish witch.

The witch who looked as ifshe might vomit at any second, skin turning sickly green. “I don’tknow. I just knew I had to get him safely away before that arrowhit me.”

“Will he returnhere?”

A shrug answered that. Thewitch wasn’t in on Cretan’s entire plan.

“Did he need something herebeyond a place to hide?” Chance prodded.

The witch’s gaze lifted tothe wall above Elodie’s head where the upstairs loft started. Aminotaur’s horns were mounted there.

No way. Cretan wasn’t thatsick that he’d nail his own brother’s horns to the wall. Washe?

“Are those Tavros’s?”Delilah asked.

The witch nodded. “He wantsto kill her with them.”

Chance watched the blooddrain from Elodie’s face, and almost went to her, but the way shewas holding herself so stiffly, he forced himself to give herspace. Plus, the disappointment with her was still heavy overhim.

“He’ll definitely come backfor those,” Alasdair muttered.

“Agreed,” Delilah said.“Elodie and Chance, you should wait here for him to return. Mylove, take this young witch where she needs to go while I see if Ican track the spell.”

The witch glanced betweenthe couple as if finally bothering to take a good look at them, then stared harder at Alasdair. “You’re not… I mean you can’tbe…”

“I am.”

The witch went even whiterthan Elodie had. “That’s just my luck,” she muttered.

Alasdair didn’t comment ashe took her by the arm, and without even a disturbance of air, teleported them elsewhere. Delilah nodded and disappeared a secondlater.

Leaving Chance alone withElodie.

“I didn’t compel you,” shesaid.

He stared across the roomat her. Did he believe her? Elodie had never been a liar, but he’dalso given in to her arguments after she’d done that. She’d alsoshut down on him now, not giving him even a glimpse of heremotions.

Back to the way it had been before.

Looking away, she movedinto the living room and dropped onto one of the couches, the slumpto her shoulders defeated.

Fuck this.

He did believe her. And hewasn’t letting her just walk out of his life. Not without afight.

He sat right down besideher and tugged her into his side. “You don’t have to,” she said.“The arrow—”

“I want to.”

She went still and silentin his arms, but she didn’t pull away either or protest.

“How’s your neck?” heasked.
