Zoe spoke next. “Mason, I’m so glad we were able to unravel this situation.”

“But how did you find Louise? Did she explain I had nothing to do with it all?”

“Never mind the first question. As to the second, yes, she explained it was an assignment. For both your and her own benefit.”

“Yes, that’s what she told me.” Mason, too, was feeling relieved. “Zoe? May we speak privately?”

“Of course.” She pushed the speaker button to the off position and moved to a more private corner of the room. “How are you feeling? Is your leg alright? How did it happen? Too many questions?”

“You can ask as many as you want. I’m much better now that you’ve called. Leg is better. Lots of bruises. Not exactly sure what happened, but an Inspector Crenshaw of the building authority was here to speak to me. There is going to be an investigation.” He didn’t want to tell her he would likely lose his job. That was a conversation for another time. If there was another time.

“What do you suppose happened?” Zoe asked.

“I really have no idea. Thankfully no one was on the platform at the time or it could have been deadly.”

Zoe furrowed her brow. Both of them had recently avoided deadly accidents. Coincidence? She made a mental note to discuss this with Izzie. Perhaps Fergus could have someone check into it. “I’m so glad you’re alright.”

“All in one piece.” Mason smiled into the phone. “They put me on leave.” He paused. “I was thinking of taking the time to go down to Cornwall.”

“Sounds lovely. I so enjoyed our weekend there.” Zoe smiled back.

“Do you have any holiday time?” he asked.

“Holiday?” Zoe thought, running through a mental list: Thanksgiving, Christmas, Fourth of July . . .

“Vacation,” he clarified.

“I do, actually.” Vacation and likely unemployment, she thought to herself.

“Do you think you could find the time to cross the pond and join me?”

“I would be delighted,” Zoe cooed. “When did you have in mind?”

“Week after next?” he asked.

“Perfect.” It would give her time to plan and get kitty-sitters. Then it dawned on her that he hadn’t said for how long. “Oh, and how long will we be there?”

“How much time do you have?” he asked.

“Let’s say ten days?” Zoe didn’t want to overstay her welcome, and the cats would have hissy fits if she stayed away for too long. For real.

“Splendid.” Mason’s voice was jubilant. “Just send me your flight details and I’ll do the rest.”

“Mason?” Zoe’s voice grew softer. “I am so happy you called.”

“I’m chuffed.”

“Chuffed?”

“Over the moon,” he replied.

“I need to learn more of your idioms.”

“I teach a master class.”

“I promise to be a good student.”

“I have no doubt.”
