“He just left him alone?”

“Apparently. I was asleep and didn’t even realize you guys were gone.”

Lena and Mihalis came out just then and Lena was scowling. “Mihalis said he took off with a blond lady.”

“What a loser!” Raegan hissed, folding her arms across her chest. “I really want to throat punch him now.”

“And there he is!” Lena put Mihalis’ hand in Raegan’s and then stalked across the street to where Loren had his arm around a tall blond. “Where the hell did you go?!” she demanded, coming face to face with him.

He turned in surprise. “I met someone and we went for a swim,” he responded. “What’s your problem?”

“My problem? I asked you to watch Mihalis for a few minutes so I could use the restroom and order food. He’s three years old, for God’s sake! What were you thinking?”

“Mick was right there,” Loren waved an impatient hand.

“He was asleep!” she almost shouted. “Mihalis could have wandered off… or, or drowned.”

Loren rolled his eyes. “Oh, please. Don’t be a drama queen. He’s obviously fine.”

“You’re a real piece of work.” Mick had strolled over to join them. “You don’t leave a kid on the beach like that.”

“He’s fine.” Loren narrowed his gaze. “And frankly, you should be glad I’m playing hooky with you or I’d have to tell my uncle what you’re doing all day while he’s paying you that nice six-figure income.”

“That has nothing to do with leaving a toddler alone on a public beach,” Mick snapped.

“Whatever, we’re out of here.” He slid his arm around the blonde’s waist and they started walking the other direction.

“Hope your friend can drive you home!” Mick called after them.

Loren merely held up his right hand, proudly showing off his middle finger without even turning around.

“I hate him,” Lena muttered.

“You and me both.” Mick shook his head. “Come on, let’s go get the food you ordered. I’ll talk to him tomorrow.”

“He needs someone to smack him upside the head,” she said, following him back to the restaurant.

“I’m going to talk to his uncle, too,” Mick said. “He’s been pretty useless on this project and now he’s just getting petty. I don’t like this game he’s playing.”

“He’s…” She paused. “What’s the word for greasy, oily—a shady person?”

“Smarmy? Slick?”

“Exactly!” She made a face. “Be careful with him, Mick—I think he wants you gone.”

“Good luck with that—he flunked out when he was at the university and now he’s taking one class at a time online, just to finish his bachelor’s.”

“No surprise there.”

“You could have woken me, you know,” he said after a slight hesitation.

She glanced at him in confusion.

“I would have watched Mihalis for you,” he continued. “I mean, he’s a sweet kid and you were getting food for all of us. I wish you’d asked me instead of Loren.”

“I should have,” she admitted. “There probably won’t be a next time, but if there is, you can bet I won’t be asking Loren.”

She headed to the counter to pay for their order, and Mick was surprised to see Mihalis leave Raegan and come to stand with him. He smiled up at him, babbling away in Greek.
