“Wow. Thanks, Dallas. If you go down the hall and make a right, you can exit without having to go through the lobby. Just in case you want to avoid the chaos.”

“Got it.” I wave and find Maven waiting for me outside the door. “Ready, pretty girl?”

“Yeah.” She smiles and stands on her toes. Her lips brush against the corner of my mouth, and she puts her hand in mine. “Let’s go home.”

FORTY

MAVEN

“June is asleep,”I say.

“Thanks for being on bedtime story duty,” Dallas says.

“It’s the highlight of my day.” I look down at him and put my hands on my hips. “How are you feeling?”

“The exact same way I’ve felt the last two weeks. Great.” Dallas reaches up and pulls me into his lap. We go tumbling back into the pillows on the bed, and I laugh. “I’ve played a game since then, and I have no lingering pain. You need to stop worrying about me.”

“I just want to make sure because I care about you.”

“You helped a lot, Mae. You’re the only reason I smiled those first three days after the concussion. Without you, I would’ve died of boredom.”

“That would have been a tragedy.”

“Maybe next time I get hurt you could walk around the apartment in a nurse’s outfit.”

“If I did that, you’d never let yourself get better.” I rest my head on his chest and sigh. “I’m sorry your sister and niece couldn’t make it up here.”

“Me too. The weather is bad all up and down the east coast, and their flights have already been canceled twice. It’s too muchof a headache for them to keep going to and from the airport, so I told them not to worry about it. If we make it to the Super Bowl, I’ll fly them out.”

“Guess that means you’re going to be stuck with my family for Thanksgiving tomorrow. I’m sorry for all the chaos that’s going to ensue.”

“Are you sure it’s okay that June and I come to your dad’s place? I don’t want y’all to go out of your way for us.”

“It’s not going out of our way at all.” I run my fingers across his jaw and drag my nails through his beard. He shivers, and I smile. “Lacey and Shawn will be there. My mom is bringing her partner. My dad and Maggie, too, of course, and there’s plenty of space. June and I will leave for the stadium when you do so we only have to take one car.”

Dallas hums and lifts the hem of my shirt. He rubs along the underside of my bra with his thumb. “It’s going to be very difficult to be around your family and not touch you like I want.”

“You’re going to have to try, buddy. There are going to be knives out, and it would be great if we could get through the meal without Shawn trying to stab you.”

He laughs and tucks his chin into the crook of my neck. “Do you think your dad will care that you’re dating me? I’m not sure how I’d feel about June dating someone eight years older than her.”

“He’d be a hypocrite for caring; he and Maggie are over a decade apart. But my dad likes you. He thinks you’re a nice guy. The only things he’ll want to know are if you make me happy, and if you treat me right.”

“Do I make you happy, Maven Wood?” he asks low in my ear.

“You do. Very happy. That’s all that matters. Fuck the age difference.”

“You make me happy too.” Dallas’s touch moves to the other side of my chest. His fingers brush over the fabric of my bra. “I’ve missed you. Feel like I haven’t had you in days.”

“We had phone sex when you were out of town last weekend.” My eyes flutter closed when he pulls my shirt over my head. He takes the cups of my bra and folds them down, pushing my breasts up. “You took a pair of my underwear with you, remember?”

“Fucking ruined them, too. But it’s not as good as the real thing.” He hums and dips his chin, taking me in his mouth. His tongue swirls over my nipple, and I let out a soft exhale. “I know how much you like being touched. Being teased.”

“Dallas,” I whine, and I squirm in his lap. He’s growing hard under me, and I reach between us to stroke his length.

“Is there something you want, Maven? Use your words, pretty girl.” He bites down and I cry out. “Do you want to come just from this?”

“Yes. No.” I drop my head back and let out a frustrated groan. “I want you in me.”
