“Sort of. I’m not a saint, Maven. I see things I like. Things I want but can’t have. And sometimes it’s really fucking difficult to keep my hands to myself.”

“What kind of things do you want?” she asks, and it sounds like a dare. Like she already knows the answer, but she wants to hear me say it.

I’ve already dug myself deep into a hole by telling her all of this, so I might as well keep being honest.

“I thought about kissing you for the first time thirty minutes ago, and now I can’t stop.”

“Oh,” she whispers. Her gaze drops to my mouth, and she licks her lips. “Would that be the worst thing in the world?”

“No. Fuck, no. It would be—” I blow out a breath. “We can’t. I can’t.”

“I get it.” Maven nods, and when she drags her thumb across her bottom lip again, I watch it like a starved man. “Do you want me to move out?”

“What? Of course I don’t want you to move out unless you want to move out. I didn’t suggest the roommate thing just so I could ogle you.”

“You can ogle me. I’ve been ogling you. You have a very nice ass, Lansfield.”

I laugh. “So do you. But I think you already know that.”

“I do, but it doesn’t hurt to hear it every now and then.”

“Did we just agree that we can eye-fuck each other?” I ask.

“I think so. And they say romance is dead. Are there rules to this eye-fucking?”

“We can look, but we can’t touch. We’re friends, and I like having you as a friend. Anything more might get complicated with June and the team and the league and?—”

“Someone would lose their job, and neither one of us wants that. So we’re going to be on our best behavior and keep our hands to ourselves. I agree to your rules because it’s the best for everyone. I don’t want anyone to get hurt. Especially June. She’s become my number one priority now, too.”

My heart twists in my chest when I hear her say that. Maven is the first woman outside my family who’s ever shown an ounce of interest in my daughter, and knowing how important June is to her makes me ache.

It reminds me that even though June’s gone so long without any female attention, she has it now. It’s from the most perfect person, and I can’t imagine a better role model.

“Good,” I say.

“Good.” Maven stands up, and she looks down at me. “I’m going to head to bed before I get myself in trouble. Thirty minutes ago, I thought about kissing you for the first time, too, and now I can’t stop either.”

“Good night, Mae,” I say as she heads toward the hallway to her room.

“Good night, Dallas.” She pauses, and her grin turns wicked. “If you ever feel like breaking the rules and need a hand with something, you know where I’ll be.”

I groan and press the heels of my palms into my eyes. I stay on the couch longer than I care to admit, willing my dick to calm down and doing everything in my power to not imagine her spitting in her hand and jerking me off.

I fail miserably.

TWENTY

MAVEN

“Hello?”I close the door to my dad’s apartment and head for the living room. “Anyone home?”

“Mae?” My dad appears in the kitchen with a smile on his face. “What are you doing here, kid?”

“Hey, Dad.” I throw my arms around him in a tight hug when I get close enough to reach him. “I thought I’d come by and say hi.”

“You’re not working?”

“Not today. Dallas got back from a road game last night, so he and June are spending the day together.”
