I live inside my head and was thinking about how you fail in book terms since you are blond…?

In the porchlight, I saw his blond hair more clearly and his eyes. He didn’t have baby blues, like I would have guessed, but very light browns instead. Maybe even a green or hazel.

“Mm-hmm,” he said way too snootily and turned back around.

That made me want to laugh again because I was nervous. He likely thought I was a weirdo, which wouldn’t be wrong. I completely owned who I was, so it didn’t bother me most of the time.

Once inside, I ogled him some more. The man was gorgeous. I might have sworn off dating for the last two years, but I could still appreciate a man who looked good in pajamas. When he turned, I glanced up and away from his rear. He didn’t seem to notice since he was pointing toward the stairs. “You can stay in any of the rooms upstairs. Mine is down here.”

“Awesome. Is there any specific place you don’t want me to go?” I asked.

It must have been a weird question because he cocked his head slightly, his lips flattening. “Is there anywhere you should be other than the guest room or bathroom?” He pointed toward a doorway. “Of course, you’re welcome in my kitchen, too. All I ask is that you clean up after yourself while you’re staying here.”

“Right. Of course,” I agreed, then looked down at my muddy boots. “Um…”

“You can put them by the door.”

I put my boots away and looked up to find him staring at my socks. He sighed and shook his head, then headed up the stairs. I peeked down at my feet. What was the problem? Sure, they didn’t match, but if I tried keeping all my socks the same, I’d never be able to keep any because the dryer ate them all.

Maybe it wasn’t about my socks, even though he was looking at them when he did. I’d give the man the benefit of the doubt. I ran up the stairs behind him. He dropped my bag at the top. “Pick a room.”

And with that, he walked back down and left me to myself.

My stomach grumbled as I slipped into one of the rooms. I should have grabbed something to eat on the way, because I refused to go downstairs. I’d inconvenienced him enough for one night. Maybe there was a shower upstairs I could use, though. I’d never be able to sleep unless I cleaned up.

There was a scratch at the door, then a whimper. I smiled and opened it. “Hey, Bear,” I cooed as I rubbed his head.

“Max!” Hudson yelled. The dog and I flinched. “Get down here.”

Max wagged his tail and went downstairs.

“Okayyy.”

The good news was that Hudson didn’t seem to be a creep. He might be an asshole, though.

Hudson

Edwin was right in his assumption. His sister was nothing I desired in a woman. Even when she didn’t say anything, she was still loud. From her bright-red hair to her black nails, I felt ensnared, like I couldn’t look away. I didn’t like that. It was bad enough she was in my home, and she was sonoticeable.

Her hair had been so vibrant beneath my light outside that it appeared to glow. Her voice was soft, yet I felt like a siren had been speaking, about to drag me to the sea. And her eyes were brown, but so fucking bright.

And she had way too much personality for one woman. What reason did she have for laughing out of nowhere as we walked inside the night before? She called Max a bear since she thought he was a polar bear. As odd as she was, she had stolen my focus since she pulled into my driveway. My heart felt tight and weird when she smiled. I felt exhausted just at the idea of her smiling and snickering more in my home. After only a few minutes in her presence, and I was positive I was correct in my judgement of Genie.

I heard her showering the night before when I went to bed. It was disconcerting and a bother to my schedule to have someone in my home. Thankfully, it would only be a week, and I could chalk it up as being charitable. Proof that I could be a good guy when I wanted. I still didn’t understand how I ended up in that situation. Yet, I had been curious about Genie the entire time I worked. It had to be because a stranger was in my home while I was at the restaurant.Had to be.

My guest must have gone out while I was at work because she parked in the middle of my driveway when she returned. I couldn’t get into my garage or park beside her. I had to leave my truckbehindher Kia, despite there being plenty of room for two vehicles to park side by side.Women drivers. I snorted.

I was walking by her car when the door opened. I barely saw the movement and wasn’t quick enough to step away. But I fucking felt the door as it smacked into my knees. I stumbled back a step.

“Oh, shit,” Genie mumbled as she jumped out of the tiny vehicle. She had a hoody over her head. Her nose and cheeks were pink, like she’d been outside in the cold for a while. That red hair of hers was even brighter in the daylight as she pushed the hood off her head. My heart did the weird thing again.

Fuck. She was so easy to look at. It pissed me off.

“I saw you pulling in the driveway,” she said.

“You couldn’t wait until I walked by?” I scowled but refused to rub my knee in front of her.
