“I didn’t realize you’d move so quickly,” she blurted as she glanced behind me. “I’m sorry. Did you want to park in your garage?”

“For a vehicle so tiny, it amazes me that you’ve managed to take up my entire driveway with it.”

“Sorry about that. I can move it right now. I didn’t know how long you’d be gone, so I was thinking about heading out until you got back. It’s why I parked like that.”

“You’re a guest. I offered you a place to stay this week. You don’t have to wait on me.”

“Yeah, but I locked the door when I left this morning and didn’t think about how I’d get back inside.”

I stopped and turned. She held her hands to her mouth, blowing them. It dawned on me. She was red in the face because she was freezing. “How long have you been out here?”

“Not that long.” She waved her hand quickly and averted her gaze, which told me one thing. Genie wasn’t a good liar.

Fuck. I should have given her my spare keys. Why would she willingly freeze? Making me feel like a total shithead for allowing it to happen, as if I had control over my guest.

“Does your car not have heat?” The vehicle looked brand new.

“Yes, but carbon monoxide poison is a real thing.”

“So, you were out here for a while,” I said, and pulled my keys out of my pocket, singling out the house one before handing them to her. “Unlock the door and give me your keys. I’ll move your car.”

It should have been a simple exchange, but Max barked. Genie looked toward the door as she passed me her keys. Her hand was nowhere near mine when she let go, and the keys fell to the ground between us.

“Shit,” she muttered.

I bent to retrieve them as she did, and our heads bumped.

“Fuck,” I hissed.

“That’s what I say.” She groaned.

We were rubbing our heads when our eyes met. I was closer than I should have been. Her breath fanned my cheek, and she smelled good, like strawberries, and clean. She wore a bit of eye makeup. Her brown eyes were…

Fuck again. I fixated on her. The longer I looked, the more I felt like I was getting pulled into her orbit. Was it the red hair or the eyes? What sucked me in? She still stared at me with those brown eyes, lips parted, as if she were studying me too. The odd chick was making me odd with her. I didn’t know how else to explain it.

I made a sound in my throat and took her keys, then dropped mine in her palm before creating distance.

She’s not my type, I told myself. She seemed all bright and shit, and I was more like gray.

“Go on in,” I told her.

When I made it to the driver’s side, I heard her screech. Turning around, I spotted Genie on the ground with Max licking her face. “Max!” I yelled, and the dog sauntered off like he hadn’t bulldozed into our guest. “What is with you, man?”

Maybe I wasn’t doing my dog any good by not having any visitors. He didn’t know how to behave around women.

“It’s okay.” Genie stood and started patting her ass off.

Just as I was turning away, something about her actions made me do a double-take. Even a woman would have looked for a second. My eyes widened, and I palmed the back of my neck, knowing I should have turned my damned head. She had a hole in her black leggings, right at her ass crack, and she noticed it when her finger snagged the spot. She twisted a bit, trying to see. “Are you kidding me? Did I leave the house with this hole?”

I placed my fist over my mouth and averted my gaze. Was she not wearing underwear? From the amount of pale skin I saw, she fucking wasn’t.How could she not notice the breeze with how cold it was?

“Maybe it happened when Max jumped you,” I said as I opened her vehicle’s door. That had to be the explanation. The other possibility didn’t make sense.

“I hope,” she mumbled, then stiffened and eyed me suddenly. “Did you see?”

I decided it was better not to answer and hopped in the car to straighten out my driveway.

“Did you see Bear?”
