I laughed as my cheeks heated. “It’s opening day. I think he wants to see the store do well.”

She patted my shoulder. “No. I believe he wants to see his wife happy.”

“Yes, you’re probably right.”

The old woman looked up at the man and said, “How about we grab us a cake, dear?”

A few minutes later, I had their cake boxed up and waved them goodbye as they left. By then, I had a long in front of the register. Only two people had books, but I had high hopes more readers would come.

I didn’t know how much time had passed when Loretta nudged my shoulder. “Randall texted me. He needs Hudson in the back helping with orders, but he’s out front, telling everyone to visit his wife’s bookstore.”

I laughed. “So, I’m guessing Randall wants me to go send my husband to the kitchen?”

“I reckon you should,” Loretta said. “I’ll take care of the register.”

I entered the restaurant and immediately shook my head when I saw Hudson handing a young couple one of the vouchers near the front entrance.

“The bookstore belongs to my wife. Make sure to check it out,” he said as they hurried out the door.

Behind him, one of the new hires had his arms folded over his chest. “You said wife five times in the last sixty seconds.”

Hudson turned around. “Only five. I’m slackin’.”

Once I was closer, I cleared my throat. As soon as Hudson saw me, he wrapped me in his arms and kissed my forehead.

“What are you doing out here?” I asked.

“Making sure people grab the voucher on the way out.”

“What a good hubby you are,” I whispered into his ear. “But Randall needs help. The bookstore has plenty of traffic.”

“Has anyone said anything about the alien romance section?” Hudson asked, waggling his brows.

I snorted. “A few people have browsed the section, but no one has had questions yet.”

“Don’t worry, there will be people interested in it like you.” He waggled his brows again.

I rolled my eyes, smiling. “Would you stop?”

“The alien shit is actually good. I understand the hype.”

My husband was yanked away from me by Randall.

“Go work.” I blew Hudson a kiss.

“You got this, baby. You’re going to do great.”

“I am going to do great.”

“That’s my girl.”

My heart felt like it could burst from the love I had for Hudson.

I stood there for a minute, just smiling, when someone tapped my shoulder. It was a young woman. “Are you okay, ma’am? You’ve been standing there a while…”

“You know what. I’m more than fine,” I told her. “Everything’s perfect.”

THE END
