“Linc…but why?”

“He touched you,” he says. As simple as that.

“H-how did you do it? You smelled of gasoline.”

Noah turns in bed to face me and his smile is so wide, his face may split.

“Fire. I can show you. I took a picture of them before they burned.”

I stop breathing. My eyebrows are almost in my hairline, why the hell would he think I’d want to see that?

“You took a picture? Why? Also, if anyone finds out about that picture, you could end up in prison.”

That annoying nonchalant shrug is back.

“Relax, baby. I’m good. I just wanted to show you what I’d done for us. It was so much easier than I thought. You should’ve seen my dad’s face when I hit Linc with my baseball bat.” Noah laughs like he’s telling me a funny story from his college days.

“A baseball bat? This is so fucked up, Noah. Where’s the bat?”

“In my trunk.”

“And what if you get pulled over?”

“I’ll say I play baseball. It's clean.”

“Noah…”

With brute force, he slams me onto my back, caging me in with his arms resting on either side of my head.

“Enough talk. I’m promised a fuck tonight, and I’m cashing in on it.”

“But I think we should discuss?—”

He covers my mouth with his hand.

“I need you, baby. Everything I did today was for us. Unless you want me to leave?”

Conniving bastard. He knows I don’t want him to leave. So I cave, letting myself fall for his words yet again.

“No, I don’t want you to leave. I just want to be certain this won’t come back on you. I love you.” The last part comes out so quietly that I’m not certain it wasn’t only in my mind.

Noah gently glides his hands through my hair, and I close my eyes at the tender touch. I know he can’t feel the same, but hefeels something for me, and that's enough. Wade said he loved me but never showed it. I’d prefer actions over words.

“Chase, I will never let you go. We live will this life on earth together, and we will leave this world together. I will destroy anyone in our way. You come first. You’re my lungs, baby. It's not love, it's obsession and desire. I have to own you fully.”

I’m gasping at his words. That’s a better promise than love.

“Then own me, my shadow.”

And he does. All. Night. Long.

CHAPTER 41

NOAH

After the police contacted me this morning about the fire and possible death of my father, I drove into town to take up my usual spot near Chase’s building. They have to do some testing first before they can confirm it’s him with how badly burned the corpse was. Apparently, it took a while for the fire to be reported, as I suspected it would.

The house has been completely destroyed. Burned to rubble, where it belongs. They’ve taken up leads of the companies that had beef with my father, putting me clearly out of the line of fire. I may or may not have strategically placed my father’s paperwork with all his dealings on the passenger seat of Linc’s car. The cops are now trying to track down my mother, considering she is next of kin to my dad. Like I told them, we weren’t close, and I didn’t have to lie when I said I had no idea where she went. It's over now, and I’m done thinking about it.
