Page 44 of Never Tear Us Apart

“Hey, isn’t that the girl you hooked up with the night of the party?” Jake turns to Cal.

Sure enough, behind Ellery is Miriam Cook and her brother, Asher, and the rest of the guys on Elmhurst’s JV football team.

Only, they weren’t the JV team anymore. Asher was Elmhurst’s star quarterback this past year and the rest of the guys were the team’s first string. The guys around him were the same players his sister inferred Ellery slept with the night of the party.

“Why would she be friends with them?” Jake asks.

“My question exactly.”

“It doesn’t make sense,” he shakes his head. “I get her being friends with Ellery because she’s cool as hell, but the rest, given what you just told us?”

“Wait.” I turn to Jake and shake my head. “Are you talking about her friend?”

“Yeah.” He looks back at me, confused. “Who did you think I was talking about?”

“Ellery.”

“Oh, no man, sorry. Her friend, Sparky.”

“Sparky?” I arch a brow.

His lip hitches and he takes a sip of his beer. “The night of the party, I ran into her after my talk with Ellery in the kitchen. She took one look at me and the blonde I was with and just lit me up.”

It’s the first thing that’s made me smile since Ellery arrived. “She did what?”

“Yup. She gave me a piece of her mind and then some. You know,” he shakes his head with a laugh, “that blonde was ready to do whatever I asked, but that one right there,” he nods in Jenica’s direction, “wanted nothing more than to knock me on my ass.”

We both look back over to the crowd of Elmhurst kids and my stomach twists into knots. Given the way Ellery is holding court, she doesn’t even notice that I’m here and it makes me wonder if the girl I once adored is even still there.

I chug the rest of my beer, drop the bottle to the ground, and hold my hand out. “I need another.”

Cal reaches into the cooler and hands me a cold bottle. I twist off the cap and take a long, angry swing.

Birds dip high and low in the sky, and waves roll slowly onto the shore. It’s a perfect day, but thanks to the princess in the Body Glove bikini, it’s lost on me.

“So, are we allowed to go over and say hi?” he asks. “Because that brunette…fuck man. She’s smokin’ hot.”

“Do what you want,” I grumble. “Maybe she and Mildred would be up for three times the fun tonight.”

“Miriam,” Marcus and Jake say in unison.

“Yeah, yeah,” I grumble.

“Well, all right.” Cal pushes up from the chair and grins. “Game on. If you three know what’s good for you, you’d start playing too and get to work on grabbing a little summer snatch of your own.”

“I’m good,” Marcus holds up his hand. “I’m meeting up with Allison later.”

“Who?” Cal looks at him, slightly confused.

“Dude, the girl that’s been over the last two nights.”

“Oh, right,” Cal laughs. “Sorry, I’m not used to you getting more ass than these two.”

Jake sticks his arm out behind me and flips Cal off, while keeping his attention in the same direction I am. Asher, Royce and some of the football team have set up a volleyball net and are trying to get a game going.

“Well,” Jake pushes up from his chair. “I do believe that’s an invitation. What’s a beach volleyball game without Iceman? You in Mav?”

He looks at me and I shake my head. “Don’t ever call me that again.”
