I shake my head and look at her, confused. “What are you…”

“Please,” she dismisses me with a wave of her hand, “stupid doesn’t look good on you, Cruz. I know you’ve had your share ofaction at Highland.”

“Says who?”

“Says you!” She throws up both hands.

“I don’t know what—”

“The next time you and your buddies talk about nailing and playing,” she cuts me off, “perhaps you should remember the way sound travels along the rocks. Which, by the way, I hope you enjoy sloppy seconds because Miriam Cook has slept with practically the whole town.”

Shit. My conversation with the guys today. She heard that? “I didn’t sleep with Miriam.”

“Whatever,” she looks away. “It doesn’t matter.”

I reach for her face and pull it back to me. “I’m telling you the truth.”

The way she’s looking at me makes my chest ache. It’s full of hurt, regret, and worst of all, betrayal. The kind that festers in your marrow and compels you to make the worst possible choices.

That’s why I can’t let go of the idea that she may be interested in anyone besides me because she would be justified if she were. Especially if she believes I tried to forget about her by screwing everything that walked.

“I don’t want to do this with you again,” she says tiredly. “You need to leave, Cruz.”

“No.” I shake my head. “I’m not leaving until we talk.”

If Ellery won’t listen to what I have to say about her so-called friends, then perhaps she will at least listen to me when I apologize for what I said and did the other night.

“I think you’ve said enough for one lifetime, don’t you?” She spins on her heel and heads for the stairs. “Just leave.”

I eat up the space between us and grab her by the arm. “Ellery, stop, please.”

She looks down at my hand, then back up. “What are yougoing to do if I don’t, spank me?”

Her indignance is both infuriating and intoxicating. “You know, that’s not a bad idea.”

Bending at my knees, I pick her up, and throw her over my shoulder. “Hey!” she shouts. “Put me down!”

I can’t help but laugh as I make my way to the stairs, holding her with one hand and grabbing the banister with the other. “No way, baby.”

“I’m not your baby.” She kicks her legs harder, while clawing at my back. “Put me down, now!”

I make my way up the stairs quickly, and when we hit the second floor, I turn right and head down the hall that leads to my old room. “Not until we talk.”

“I don’t want to talk to you. I don’t even want to see you, Bennett!”

“Well, tough.”

I stride into my room and toss her down onto the bed. Before she can get up, I straddle her legs and pin both arms on either side of her head. She’s breathing heavily, and her eyes are full of fire. Fuck, I forgot what it’s like to see her like this—restrained, and under my command.

While Ellery may have awakened my need for control the moment she walked into my life, I awakened her penchant for submission when I walked into hers. But it wasn’t until we began sleeping together the curiosity to experiment with both reared its head.

Ellery liked to push the boundaries, and she entertained my need to be in control, which created a trust and intimacy between us that I knew I would never find with anyone else.

Sex was always good with Ellery but watching her beg for more as I pinned her arms over her head …shit, just thinking about it made my dick hard. And judging by the flush of her cheeks, being under my control still makes her hot, too.

“Let me up,” she hisses.

Leaning in, I bring our faces only an inch apart. “You are going to listen to me, Ellery. Every word. And when I’m done, then I’ll go.”
