“Trying to find one of those big envelope things.”

“Don’t bother.” He lifts up his shirt, shoves the stack down the back of his shorts, and then drops his shirt back down. “Come on.”

We make our way out of the office, and back the way we come—both of us blowing out a tense breath once we lock the door and exit the building.

“Shit,” he runs a hand through his hair. “That was crazy.”

“It was,” I agree.

“My first B&E,” he grins. “Gotta say, I like you giving me one of my firsts, Butler.”

My cheeks flush with heat and he nods toward the street.“Next stop, the Medical Examiner’s office.”

I work my lower lip nervously.

“What?” he asks and I point over his shoulder.

He turns and looks at the door we’ve just come through. “Don’t tell me…”

“City positions, city building,” I shrug.

He drops his head back and looks up, shaking it. “Alright. Let’s drop this off and go back for round two.”

We make our way down the side of the building, and when we reach the Jeep, shove the stack under the passenger’s seat.

When we’re done, we head back to the subterranean door. Cruz opens the lock with his card again, and we make our way through the maze once more, heading up to the first floor. When I point to the other end of the building, we hurry and take a nondescript stairwell down a level.

Cruz reaches for my hand and I take it gratefully. I hated this part of City Hall. I always thought I saw ghosts lurking in the shadows.

“If we have to go into a morgue…” He tightens hold of my hand and pulls me closer.

“We’re not,” I laugh, but it sounds nervous, even to my own ears. “That’s in the hospital. This is just where they bring the bodies for evaluation. That’s why this entrance is the only way in from here. The other is through the alley.”

“Oh, well, in that case.” He shoots me a wry look that I translate to mean, ‘are you fucking kidding me?’ and I can’t help but think the same.

After jimmying the door open like he did the outside entrance, I rummage around Skye’s father’s desk, looking for a key to his filing cabinet. As I do, I see what looks like an autopsy for a young girl on the top of a pile marked, IN.

“How sad,” I shake my head. “Jane Doe. And she’s young.”

Cruz walks over and looks down at the paper over myshoulder. “Looks like she came in this week. Was there an accident or something in town?”

“Not that I know of.” I look down for the cause of death. “It says she died of acute asphyxiation.”

Cruz shakes his head and holds out his hand. “Let me see that?”

I pass him the report and continue looking for the key. When I find it, I push up from the chair and make my way over to the silver row of filing cabinets along the wall.

After unlocking the drawer marked B, I flip through the files quickly, and when I see my father’s file, I grab it and pull it out. “Found it.”

Setting it down on the pulled out row of files, Cruz makes his way over. “You ready?” he asks.

I look at him and nod. “Ready as I’ll ever be.”

Opening the folder, I start to review the report. Luckily, the first few pages are a summary. Then I get to the lab reports, including the one I’ve been anxious to get my hands on.

“What’s this?” I point to a drug that I have never heard of on the toxicology report.

“It’s an anabolic steroid.” Cruz shakes his head. “
