I’m not sure why that is, but with each kiss he presses against my skin, the more disgusted I become.

“I have to get ready,” I tell him, keeping a stronghold on my towel, fearing it might drop.

“What’s the rush, babe? Didn’t you miss me?” he coos, his hand running up the inside of my bare thighs, traveling higher and higher.

“Coop, I’m not in the mood right now,” I tell him with a stern tone, grabbing onto his wrist with my free hand before he’s able to reach his destination. “You really scared me. I can’t switch it on just because you want me to.”

He pulls his wrist away from my grip easily enough and takes a step back, anger flashing in his eyes.

“I can’t touch my girlfriend now? Is that it?” He scowls, crossing his arms over his chest.

“I’m saying that I didn’t expect you to barge through the door like an assailant. You could have given me the heads up that you were coming.”

“Oh, like you called me when you just showed up at my apartment last time you went to New York?! Little hypocritical, don’t you think?” He arches a brow.

“Coop, I don’t want to fight.” I let out a frustrated exhale. “We’ll just go around in circles and not get anywhere. Andfrankly, I don’t want to be late for my best friend’s birthday party.”

“Fine. Whatever. I need to take a shower anyway,” he rebukes, darting into the bedroom and slamming the ensuite door shut behind him.

I’m not sure why I’m peeved that he just walked in and made himself right at home, especially considering that thisishis house more than it is mine.

When I hear the shower start to run, I sneak into the ensuite and take my hairdryer out of its drawer, preferring to style my hair out here in the bedroom rather than do it inside the ensuite with him still in there.

God.

When did we get so out of sync?

When did his touch start to repulse me?

How did we get here, and what does that say about our relationship?

All these questions float away in my head as I hurry to get myself ready, wanting to be dressed by the time he finishes his shower.

Thankfully, I’m already fixing my makeup when Coop swings the bathroom door open, no longer wearing the pissed-off expression he had on his face when he went in.

“You look fucking fantastic, babe. You’ll outshine Piper at her own party in that dress.”

“That’s not my intention.” I frown, rethinking my ensemble.

“It never is, but I bet you’ll be the finest piece of ass there.”

“What did you just say to me?” I ask, eyes wide in astonishment.

Cooper has never talked like that to me before.

Not ever.

He’s always been respectful. Even when we were teenagers, he was always polite and courteous.

“I said that you’ll be the most beautiful woman there. What did you think I said?” He feigns confusion.

Maybe I heard him wrong.

“Anyway, it’s a good thing I left some clothes here. I only packed for the night.”

“Does that mean you’ll be spending the full weekend in Boston?” I ask, trying to hide the trepidation in my voice.

“That’s the plan. I wanted to surprise you since you always complain that I rarely come home anymore.” He smiles. “Thought I’d take Friday off too and just make a long weekend out of it. Make my girl happy to have me all to herself.”
