Well, at least he got the surprise part right.

I am surprised.

I’m just not happy about it.

“What time is this party happening?” he asks, flinging his wet towel on my bedspread.

He knows how much I hate it when he does that.

“We’re meeting up at Roy’s at eight. Why do you ask?” I question, hurriedly grabbing his towel and placing it in the hamper.

“Never got an invitation,” he explains nonchalantly, but I don’t miss how his gaze narrows a smidge. “It’s almost like she didn’t want me to come. Either she didn’t, or you didn’t.”

“Don’t be silly. Of course I want you to go. I’m not sure why you’re surprised she didn’t send you an invite. It’s not like you and Piper have ever gotten along.”

“Ah, that beef is from when we were kids.” He smirks, still naked as the day he was born. “I’m above that petty shit. Piper is important to you. Therefore, she’s important to me,” he says, wrapping his arms around my waist and placing a chaste kiss on my cheek.

“You’ve never gone through the trouble before,” I say, trying very hard not to flinch.

“Now I am,” he says with a frown before letting go of me. “I swear, babe, it’s almost like you don’t ever want me here. Should I be worried?”

Yes.

Be worried.

Be very worried.

“No. Of course not.”

“Good. Glad that’s settled. Besides, I’m excited to meet all the new friends you’ve been hanging out with recently.”

“Friends?” I parrot.

“Oh, my bad. I meant friend. Specifically, that hockey player the media has been photographing you with.”

I bite my inner cheek.

“Are you talking aboutmy client? Nate?”

“Yeah, him. I’m very curious how you two are getting along.”

“We get along just fine. As I do with all my clients, as a matter of fact.”

“But you never got your picture taken with the other ones, babe. Just him. He’s… special.”

My spine goes ramrod straight at his unspoken accusation.

“Coop—”

“Babe, we have more than enough time to catch up later. Right now, I should get dressed. It’s like you said earlier. Don’t want to be late for the big party. Should be a fun night.”

Fun.

Right.

How come I have a sick feeling that this night will be anything but fun?
