Nate then turns around to look at me one last time, unaware that his clothes are covered with another man’s blood.

“I love you,” he says, making my heart hurt with the fear I hear in his voice.

“I love you, too. So much. We’ll get through this. I promise you, Nate. We’ll find a way to get you out of this mess.”

And when the doors close on him, my knees almost give out.

“Miss Moore. How can I help?” Wallace says beside me.

“I don’t know. I don’t know,” I sob.

“Mr. Wilder said that you should call your friend, Piper. He’s right, Miss Moore. You shouldn’t be alone. In fact, I think you should go to the hospital.”

I nod.

Because he’s right.

But before I call Piper to meet me at the police precinct, I make another call first.

“Hello? Charlotte? What do I owe the pleasure of your call?”

“Hi, Laurie. I’m calling you because I need your help.”

“Oh? Are you alright? You sound agitated,” he retorts with sincere concern in his typical British accent.

“That’s because I am. I’ll explain everything to you, but first, I need you to come to the District A-1 precinct with the best defense lawyer your money can buy.”

“Charlotte? I don’t understand.”

“You will.” I deadpan. “I’m not sure if the Guardians’ deal has been finalized yet, but one of your key players needs your help.”

“When you say player, I assume you’re talking about your date for the Winter Ball. Nathan Wilder, correct?”

“Yes. He needs help. I need your help, Laurie.”

The line goes quiet for a second before I hear him shuffle about like he’s putting on his coat.

“Tell me where you are. I’ll pick you up, and we can go to the precinct together.”

“Thank you.”

“Of course. I just need to know one thing. Well, two, actually. Are you quite alright?”

“No. Until Nate is released, I won’t be.”

“And may I ask what kind of trouble Nathan has gotten himself in now?”

“He…” I stammer, still coming to grasp what just happened. “He stopped my ex-boyfriend from… assaulting me.”

“Assault… you don’t mean?”

“Yes,” I sob softly, wiping my angry and terrified tears away. “I mean exactly what you’re assuming. Please don’t make me say it.”

“And is this ex-boyfriend of yours still breathing?” Laurie says in a dark tone—one that I thought a sophisticated man like him was incapable of having.

“Barely,” I reply flatly, not having an ounce of remorse for the way Nate almost killed him.

He would have if I didn’t stop him.
