I know he would.

But I would not have him soil his kind, sweet soul for that monster.

Cooper has shown his true colors, and he should be punished for them.

Not Nate.

Not my tenderhearted Nate.

“Good. Send me your location. I’m on my way. And Charlotte, I promise you’ll have Nate back in your arms before sundown. I give you my word.”

Not thirty minutes later, Laurie and I walk into the precinct with the best defense lawyer the Preston family money can buy—Oscar Dershowitz. A distraught Piper is already there waiting for me when we arrive, with none other than Trent Nichols at her side, who has his arm wrapped around her.

“Lottie!” She cries when she sees me, racing towards me and hugging me.

“Piper!” I sob into her shoulders as she envelops me in her arms.

“Are you okay?” she cries.

I shake my head.

“I’m going to fucking kill him. I’ll castrate the son of a bitch!” Piper shouts out for the whole world to hear.

“Now, kitten. Put away those claws,” Trent whispers behind her. “Don’t forget that you are in a police precinct. I would hate to see you behind bars because of your temper,” he coos.

Instead of biting his head off, Piper simmers down and takes a deep breath before she glances over her shoulder to look at him.

“He’ll get his, love. I’ll make sure of it.” Trent winks, and though it frightens me how sinister he sounds to my best friend, his words are just what she needs to hear to calm down.

“Miss Moore,” Oscar Dershowitz calls out to me. With Piper holding my hand, we walk towards him; he is already speaking with a police officer. “Miss Moore, this is Detective Abigail Brooks. I have informed her that you are here to make a statement against Cooper Adams and give her a detailed account of what happened between yourself and him, as well as Nathan Wilder’s involvement.”

I let the detective lead me into a room, leaving behind a pissed-off Piper as she’s not allowed to accompany me inside.

I tell Detective Brooks everything. From Cooper’s recent behavior down to falling in love with Nathan and how that affected our relationship. I tell her everything, fearing that leaving out even the most minuscule detail might hurt him somehow. I also tell her that Wallace can corroborate everything I told her.

After finishing my deposition, she calls in a photographer to take pictures of me and asks for my clothes to use as evidence, handing me gray sweats to wear afterwards. That’s when I realized Cooper had ripped most of my clothes to shreds, and that my left cheek had swollen to the size of a tennis ball. When Detective Brooks leads me back to my friends, she tells me that I should seek medical treatment as she believes me to be concussed.

“I’m not going anywhere. Not until you release Nate.”

“I understand, Miss Moore, but these things take time,” she explains with pity in her voice. “He might not even be released today. Maybe not ever.”

“Oh, my client will go home today,” Dershowitz says with conviction. “In fact, is Captain Harris here? I’d like to have a word with him.”

“And I’ll call my family doctor to look over Charlotte,” Laurie chimes in. “Is there a private room where she can be assessed?”

Detective Brooks stares at both Dershowitz and Laurie, letting out an exaggerated exhale when she realizes they mean business.

“Very well. Miss Moore can use my office when your doctor arrives. Mr. Dershowitz, you can follow me. I’ll take you to the captain.”

“Thank you.”

Dershowitz and Laurie share a conspiring look before he leaves to follow Detective Brooks.

Two excruciating hours later, no word from Nate.

The only good news is that I’m not concussed, as per Laurie’s doctor, who not only did my assessment but also gave a detailed one to the detectives dealing with my case.

Yes, my case.
