Because even though Cooper is in the hospital fighting for his life, I made sure to press charges against him along with an application for a restraining order.

“What’s taking so long?” Piper groans impatiently while Trent rubs her back to calm her nerves.

If I weren’t so upset and anxious about Nate, I’d pull my best friend to a corner and get some much-needed answers. But that will have to wait.

My priority is Nate.

And as if my thoughts summoned him, I see Nate emerging from the questioning room and walking in our direction with Dershowitz at his side. I dart out into a mad dash, leaping into his arms and vowing never to let go of him again.

“Lottie,” he whispers, holding me just as tightly, afraid someone will take me from him. “Are you okay, baby? Tell me you’re okay.”

“I am. I’m okay.”

Not believing me, he places my feet on the ground and lifts my chin up to look at my face, wincing when he sees my swollen cheek.

“I should have killed the bastard.”

“We still don’t know if you haven’t,” Piper interjects. “But I’m keeping my fingers crossed.”

Dershowitz clears his throat, giving Piper a look as if to say that she shouldn’t say things like that in a police precinct.

“Mr. Wilder is free to go. I’ll stay here to discuss a few more things with Detective Brooks and Captain Harris. We will keep tabs on Mr. Adams’ condition for the time being. If Mr. Adams pulls through as we are hoping,” he says, giving Piper a knowing look and receiving a scoff in return, “then I’m optimistic the charges will be dropped in a couple of days, and we can all put this nightmarish day behind us.”

When Nate tightens his hold on me, I know that will be easier said than done.

“Thank you,” Nate tells him and then directs his attention to Piper, Trent, and Laurie. “And thank you for taking care of my girl when I couldn’t,” he continues, wrapping his arm around my waist and facing the people who have come to his aid. “I’ll never be able to repay… just… thank you.”

Everyone nods, just thankful he’s free.

“Let’s go home, sweetheart,” Nate says with exhaustion before kissing my forehead.

“Yes.” I smile, just as drained. “Let’s go home.”

After everything we’ve had to endure, home sounds like heaven—one that I intend to treasure and keep safe for the rest of my days.

Chapter 40

Nathan

The fucker lived.

Though I’m sure he wishes he hadn’t.

Charged with assault and battery and attempted sexual assault, Cooper Adams won’t be seeing the light of day anytime soon. With Lottie’s deposition and Wallace’s eyewitness accounts, there’s no way he’ll be able to talk his way out of this one. Not that he can do much talking without his teeth. I made sure of that.

My fate is still unclear, though.

I did almost kill the rat bastard, after all.

But if I’m to believe Dershowitz, then all my charges will soon be dropped, and I’ll be the one getting off scot-free.

I hope he’s right.

Lottie seems to trust him, and, well, I trust in her.

If she says that we’re okay, then I believe her since the alternative is far too cruel to even think about.

Not that the media has helped settle my nerves any.
