“Caleb, if you can’t help, then how about you zip it?” Jack reprimands him with a scowl.

“Hey, I am helping,” Caleb insists in outrage. “I’m giving Nate here the heads up. How is that not helping?”

He’s right.

At least now I know what’s at stake.

Not that I didn’t already know before.

But suddenly, all this feels too real.

I mean, if Trent Nichols might not survive this buyout, then how am I expected to?

We sit there in silence, each one of us thinking the worst.

Or maybe it’s just me.

I mean, Jack is the Guardians’ beloved team captain, while Caleb, for all his faults, is also loved by the fans and is one of the best goalies the club has ever had.

Compared to them, I’m expendable.

“Did you tell him?” I hear Erin ask as she walks back to the kitchen.

“Yeah, love. Caleb filled him in,” Jack replies, tapping his lap for Erin to sit down.

“But did you tell him about my idea?” Erin mumbles under her breath

“What idea?” I ask, having picked up on what she just tried to whisper to her husband.

“Okay, it might be nothing, but I was thinking. This guy, whoever he is, is a big shot, right? And what is the place where you are guaranteed to see these types of men flashing their big bucks?”

“Vegas?” Caleb suggests.

“No, dimwit.” Erin rolls her eyes. “Men with money to spend on a hockey team are the same men who like to boast about their philanthropic achievements. And what better place to do that than at a fundraiser?”

“Okay,” I say, not really following her reasoning.

“It’s simple. All you have to do is be seen at the biggest fundraiser of the year and make nice with all the rich cats there,” Erin explains with a sparkle in her eye.

“Let me get this straight? Your big plan is for Nate—our Nate—to blow a bunch of rich pricks away with his winning personality? Dude, you are so fucked,” Caleb mumbles, defeated on my behalf.

“Don’t go underestimating our Nate just yet. He can be a real sweetheart when he wants to be,” she says encouragingly. “All he has to do is show the world that he’s not a menace to society like the press says. And what better way to do it than attending Boston’s biggest fundraising event of the season?”

She presses a kiss on her husband’s lips before jumping out of his lap to open one of her kitchen’s drawers.

“Now, I had to pull a lot of strings to get these tickets and… well… the person who sold them to me might be under the false impression that they are for me and Jack, but don’t worry about that. I promised them one of the best Guardians’ players there is, and that’s what they’ll be getting. There is also an auction you’ll need to participate in, but I can tell you all about it afterwards. Here,” she says excitedly, sliding the two tickets across the table to me.

Boston Winter Ball

Saturday, 11th of November

Eight pm.

“It’s this Saturday,” I groan, wondering how the hell am I going to pull this off with such short notice.

I mean, it’s not like I can change who I am overnight?
