Who am I kidding?

Caleb is right.

I’m not the kind of guy who is at ease meeting new people, nor am I the kind of guy you’d see in a crowded ballroom full of strangers in tuxedos and gowns.

It’s just not me.

“You can do this,” Erin says assuredly. “All you have to do is be yourself and talk to as many people as possible. Surely one of them will be the man considering buying the club. Just do your best to make a great first impression on everyone you meet there.”

“No pressure.” Jack smiles anxiously.

“I don’t know about this. It’s a big risk. I mean, dude, I love you and all, but you’re not exactly known for being a social butterfly,” Caleb says, biting his fingernails nervously.

“He can do this, and he will,” Erin says matter-of-factly. “Look at me, Nate,” she orders. “Do you love playing for the Guardians?”

I nod.

“And do you want to keep playing for them?”

Another nod.

“Well, it looks to me like you’re out of options,” she deadpans.

“Let’s not forget that Nate still has Piper’s plan on the table,” Jack chimes in, adding his own two cents to the conversation. “Maybe he’ll be able to change the new owner’s mind if he just follows her plan to the T. I mean, this matchmaker thing is bound to pan out, right? I’m sure there will be more fundraisers in the future that he can attend. At least that way, he doesn’t have to go at it alone.”

“That’s genius!” Erin looks at her husband with utter glee, pressing a big kiss on his lips before looking at me again. “All Nate needs is the right woman standing at his side for the event. Someone who believes in him and can give him that extra bit of courage to get him out of his comfort zone. Someone who is not easily intimidated and knows how to handle her business.”

“You look like you have someone in particular in mind, wife. Care to share?” Jack chuckles.

“I do.” She grins.

“Who? You?” Caleb questions, sounding more invested in this crazy plan than I am.

“No.” Erin shakes her head, the mischievous smile on her lips widening. “Not me.”

“Then who?” Caleb and Jack ask in tandem.

I know the name Erin’s about to utter before she even has time to say it.

“Charlotte.”

Lottie.

I guess this means I no longer have to plan our next date like I wanted.

Looks like we’ll be attending the Boston Winter Ball.

Fan-fucking-tastic.

Chapter 22

Nathan

“You look…” The words struggle to leave me as I eye Lottie up and down in her form-fitting, sparkling, cream-colored dress. “Absolutely breathtaking,” I finally manage to finish, my voice coming out all throaty and shit.

Get it together, asshole.

“Thank you.” She smiles. “You do, too. I mean… you look handsome,” she corrects, the pink blush on her cheeks making her look even more stunning.
