“Actually, I shouldn’t be saying those thingsbecauseI’m your matchmaker. Rest assured that not all my clients get this kind of one-on-one treatment.”

“Are you saying that I’m your first?” I can’t help but smile at the thought.

“Does that surprise you?”

“A little. I know how devoted you are to your clients—”

“Well, you’re not just another client,” she interrupts. “Not to me.”

“So, you’ve never been on dates with any other clients except me?”

“Not like this, no.” She shakes her head. “And now you’re smiling.”

It’s not a question, just a fact. Because the big ass smile I have on my face right now can probably be seen from outer space.

“Sorry, can’t help it,” I tell her, trying my best to keep my features in check.

“I didn’t say it for you to stop. I like it when you smile. Especially this dimple right here,” she says, pressing her finger lightly on my left cheek. “It makes you look softer.”

“Trust me, not all of me is soft right now.”

Shit, did I just say that?

Out-fucking-loud?

By the stunned expression on her face, yep.

Yes, I did.

Idiot.

“I… um… I need to go to the ladies’ room. I’ll be right back.”

Lottie doesn’t even wait for the song to finish before rushing off the dance floor at record speed.

I spooked her.

I spooked her hard.

The fuck is wrong with me?

Why the hell did I say that?

I run after her, unwilling to let this turn into something we can’t recover from. But instead of her going to the ladies’ room, I find Lottie running towards the outside balcony, the crisp winter wind creating goosebumps all over her arms.

“You’ll catch a cold out here,” I grumble, immediately pulling off my tuxedo jacket to cover her.

“Thank you. I just needed some fresh air. It was too warm to stay inside.”

With her cheeks flushed and her gray eyes sparkling, I could swear that I’d never seen true beauty until tonight.

When she begins to shiver, I instinctively wrap my arms around her, fearing she’ll get sick.

But it’s the wrong move to make.

Because like this—with Lottie in my arms and her hands pressed up against my chest—the world stops.

We stare into each other’s eyes, and for a second, I almost make myself believe she’s mine.
