“Lottie—”

“You asked me a question before,” she interrupts. “Would I ever fall for a man like you if circumstances were different?”

I swallow hard.

“Would you?”

“It would be pretty hard not to,” she whispers, but when her smoldering gaze lands on my lips—fuck—it takes everything in me not to kiss her. “Very hard.”

The wind blows one of her loose curls onto her face and I quickly swipe it away and tuck it behind her ear.

“Would you… ever be interested in a woman like me?” she asks softly. “If the circumstances were, you know, different?”

Who says I’m not already?

“Yes,” I confess in a hoarse whisper.

My heart drums madly in my chest as I feel her chest pressed against mine.

It would be so easy right now.

So fucking easy to lean in and crash my lips to hers.

I want it so fucking badly, but the scent of sweet champagne from her lips makes me stop.

She’s drunk.

I can’t kiss her like this.

Not when she’s too drunk to give her consent or even remember it later.

Fuck.

“Come on. Let’s get you home,” I groan.

“Okay.”

Her shoulders instantly droop, almost like I’ve made her sad somehow.

Disappointed even.

Though I hardly think she’s more disappointed in me than I am in myself right now.

No.

It was the right thing to do.

If one day I ever do get to kiss Lottie like I want to, then I want to make sure I will be the last man who has the privilege to do so.

Fuck, I got it bad if I’m already thinking like this.

This woman is messing with my head, and she doesn’t even see it.

Get her home, asshole, before you do something stupid, like kiss her.

After texting the limo driver, I wrap my arm around her waist and lead us outside. I help her into the back seat as she willingly follows my every instruction, looking too tired to putup a fight. When I slip inside next to her, she leans her head on my shoulder and falls asleep before we’ve even left the hotel entrance. When we finally arrive back at her apartment building, I almost don’t have the heart to wake her up.

“Lottie,” I whisper, nudging her softly. “Wake up, sweetheart. You’re home.”
