“Me,” she whispers.

“Yes,” I admit.

“So… what? I’m some kind of prize?” she asks, fury and sadness tainting her words.

Fuck.

“No, Piper. You’re not a prize, or a trophy, or a goal, or anything of that nature. What I feel for you has nothing to do with any of that. It’s a feeling. A deep-rooted feeling inside my chest that feels like it’s going to split me open one minute and shower me with peace the next. It’s…”

“Complicated. Messy,” she finishes for me before I use the ever-dreaded L-word.

“Very.” I grin.

“Maybe you should go back to therapy,” she quips.

“No, kitten. I fear the good doctor can’t cure me of what I got. I’m too far gone now.”

No meditation or twelve-step program will ever cure me of loving you.

“Let’s talk about something else,” Piper says, sounding uncomfortable with where the topic of conversation is heading.

“Fine, I’m game.” I straighten my back on the door, feeling more alert now that she’s so close. “I’ll tell you whatever you want to know. But this goes both ways. I’d like some answers, too.”

“No.”

“Yes.”

“I said no, Trent,” she says adamantly before banging the back of her head on the door.

“Don’t do that, baby. Don’t do anything to hurt yourself when I can’t do anything about it.”

“Fine. I’ll stop.”

“Thank you.” I let out an exhale. “Tell you what? I’ll make my first question an easy one. I’ll ask it, and if it makes you uncomfortable, then all you have to say is Mavericks.”

She lets out a little giggle, remembering the first time we used my safe word.

“Okay. Fine. Ask away.”

“Why didn’t you come to the Winter Ball tonight?” I’m quick to ask.

“Simple. I wasn’t invited.”

“No? Last I heard, you and Lawrence have become joined at the hip. I would have assumed he’d invited you.”

“Well, you heard wrong,” she corrects.

“So you’renotdating him?” I ask, needing her to say the words.

“I thought this was going to be a quid-pro-quo type of thing. That’s two questions, not one.” She laughs. “But to answer your question, no. I’m not dating Laurie.”

“May I ask why not?”

“That’s three, Trent. They’re starting to pile up, and it’s going to cost you.”

“Whatever you want, kitten.”

“Argh. I hate it when you call me that.”
