Chapter 24

Trent

As I read the latest changes to the contract that Lawrence insisted on, Rex picks up the only treasured memento I have on display on my desk.

“She really is quite lovely,” he says, carefully placing the photograph Shelby took of Piper and me back on my desk.

“There’s no one like her,” I affirm, longingly staring at her picture.

“Ah, that smile. I don’t think I’ve seen you smile like that since… well, I don’t think I’veeverseen you smile like that, son. Not even when I signed you as GM for the club,” Rex jokes with an approving smile stitched on his lips. “Love agrees with you.”

“It does, doesn’t it?” I reply. “I just wish Piper felt the same way, though.”

“She’s still giving you a hard time, huh?”

“It wouldn’t be Piper if she made things easy for me, but that’s okay. She needs some time to process her feelings. She’s been through a lot, and it’s normal for her to be a little shell-shocked and not want to get hurt.”

“Does that mean if I asked her to have dinner with me, she’d be skittish to accept my offer, too?” he asks worriedly.

“It depends. Are you going to make a move on my girl, old man?” I taunt.

“Don’t be an idiot, kid. You know damn well there was only one woman for me. Besides, she’s young enough to be my granddaughter, for crying out loud,” he blurts out, insulted.

“I know, old man. Take it easy. I’m just yanking your chain,” I tell him reassuringly before he has a stroke. “But dinner, huh? Am I invited?”

“Well, it would defeat the purpose if you didn’t come,” he retorts nonchalantly.

“The purpose being…”

“The purpose is that I want to get to know the girl who has stolen my kid’s heart. Is that enough of an explanation for you?” he retorts as if I should know better.

“Fair enough.” I chuckle. “We are attending her company’s Christmas party later tonight, but I think I can convince her to have dinner with us before we head over there.”

“Great. Let me know, and I’ll make the reservations at whatever restaurant she likes.” Rex claps excitedly before he heads towards the door.

“So, does that mean we’re done here?” I point at the documents in my hand that we still need to examine.

“Didn’t you hear? It’s Christmas. That’s next week’s problem.”

“You’re stalling, old man,” I reprimand with a frown. “If you don’t want to sell the club, you might as well let Preston know.”

“Who says I don’t want to sell it? Maybe I enjoy letting Preston sweat a little bit.” Rex winks.

“Fine.” I let out a sigh. “I’ll call the lawyers and tell them we need more time to analyze everything.”

“You do that. And while you’re at it, call your girlfriend first and let her know about our dinner plans.”

“Will do.” I chuckle as he waves me off to go back to his office upstairs.

I pick up my phone and call Piper, but she must be in a meeting because she declines my call. So, instead of leaving a voice message, I text her.

Me:What time do we have to be at ESA’s tonight? Are you expected to be there from the start?

I’m surprised when I see the little dots blinking away on the screen since I would have assumed she would text or call me after whatever important meeting she’s in.

Piper:The party starts around nine o’clock, but I can show up an hour or two later. Why?

Me:Rex invited us to dinner tonight.
