Until it does, I’ll just have to show Trent how much he means to me in other ways.

After finishing my lunch date with Lottie, I decide to visit Trent before heading back to ESA. It will have to be a quick visit, though, since I’m one assistant short this week. I gave Toby the rest of the week off to make up for that fiasco of a kiss at the Christmas party and Trent’s not-so-subtle threatening phone call. I had to make it up to him somehow. So I arranged a little vacation for him and his boyfriend in a sweet bed and breakfast at Martha’s Vineyard, fully paid for by yours truly. It was the least I could do for pulling him into our drama.

“Hey, kitten. How is Charlotte holding up?” Trent asks when I walk into his office.

“As best as can be expected. She’s hanging in there,” I tell him, walking over to his desk and sitting on his lap.

Trent wraps a protective arm around me and tips my chin up so his eyes can meet mine.

“And what about you, love? How are you feeling?”

“I’d feel a whole lot better if I got a kiss from my man.”

“How rude of me,” he retorts, his gaze darkening as he leans in and presses his lips on mine.

I melt into him as his tongue sweeps my bottom lip before breaking its seal and meeting its counterpart. I tug at the strands of his black hair while he gently grips me by the throat, tipping our innocent kiss into more salacious territories.

We get interrupted by Brigitte paging his desk phone, forcing us not to give in to our desire.

“This better be life or death, Brigitte,” he growls once he answers her call.

“I have Nathan Wilder out here wanting to talk to you, Mr. Nichols. Should I tell him to come back?”

Trent looks at me hopefully, but I shake my head and get off his lap.

“No. Send him in,” Trent groans disappointedly, fixing his pants to conceal the hard bulge he got from one little kiss.

A second later, Nathan walks in, looking like a man who has been put through the wringer.

“Nichols. Lee. Is this a good time?” he asks, his gaze bouncing off our faces suspiciously. “I hope I’m not interrupting.”

“You’re not.” I smile.

“You are.” Trent frowns.

“I can come back another time,” he says hesitantly, already stepping back towards the door.

“Don’t be silly.” I wave off while my man still looks like he’d love nothing more than to kick Nathan out of his office to continue our kiss.

“I won’t take too much of your time,” he explains, walking towards the chairs in front of Trent’s desk.

I stay rooted to my spot, standing beside Trent since his fingers are running up and down my bare leg.

Thankfully, Trent’s large desk conceals the endearment, but I bet Nathan suspects his GM’s mind is otherwise preoccupied.

“First of all, I’d like to thank you and the club for all the support you’ve shown me. I deeply appreciate everything you have done, including the club’s official announcement supporting me and dispelling the rumor of my suspension following the recent events.”

“Not a problem,” Trent replies, “Though my offer still stands if you’d like to take a leave of absence to take care of Charlotte. I know the team has a big game with the Chicago Titans this weekend, but I’m sure your teammates and Coach Byrne will understand if you need some time for yourself and your girlfriend.”

“Actually, it’s because of Lottie that I’m here.”

“Oh?” I interject, wondering what he could possibly need from Trent regarding Lottie.

“I… um… recently asked her to marry me,” he says, his cheeks turning pink.

“Yes, Piper told me,” Trent grins, squeezing my calf. “I guess congratulations are in order. You have had a busy week.”

“Hmm.” Nathan nods. “But I did it all wrong, and I’d like to do it right.”
