I’m about to question what he means by that, but Trent gets ahead of me and asks, “What do you need?”

“If it’s quite alright with you, I’d like your permission to use the ice rink next week so I can make a proper proposal. This time, with all of Lottie’s family and friends present,” he explains with excitement.

“Are you sure about this?” I interject, feeling like I need to be the voice of caution. “You guys just got together, and you haven’t exactly had the best start.”

“It doesn’t matter how we start. What matters is how we end. Lottie is my everything. And even though she already said yes to marrying me, I want to make my proposal right, in front of all her family and friends, like she deserves. Because Lottie… deserves everything and more.”

He says it with such conviction that I’m blown away by how much he means each and every word.

“Wow. Okay. You’re really going for it, huh?”

“No other way to be. When you know, you know. You know?” He shrugs.

“Nathan has always had difficulty finding the right words to say,” I tease, glancing over to a silent Trent.

“Oh, I don’t know. I think he said it perfectly,” Trent defends, staring into my eyes with such love embedded in them that it takes my very breath away. He then turns his attention back to Nathan and gives his full consent. “You have the rink at your full disposal. If there is anything else you need for the occasion, just let me know.”

“Thank you.” He smiles, ecstatic, while getting up from his seat. “And Piper, if you could not say anything to Lottie, I’d be forever grateful. I want it to be a surprise.”

“Of course. Though I hate keeping such a big secret from her, I’m glad to keep this one.” I grin. “Just tell me when the big proposal is going to happen so I don’t miss a second of it.”

“Don’t worry,” he grins widely. “I wouldn’t dream of not inviting you and Trent.”

“Me?” Trent asks, surprised.

“Well, yeah,” he retorts, his wide smile stretching further as his gaze bounces yet again off my face to Trent’s. “You and Piper are family. Can’t do this without family.” He winks and then walks away, unaware that he just pulled the rug out from beneath Trent’s feet.

“Well, look at that?” Trent whispers in astonishment.

I’m about to tease him a little because he has the goofiest-looking grin on his lips when I feel my phone vibrating in my purse.

“Damn it, I have to get back to the office,” I groan before reading the text, assuming it can only be related to work.

But my frown only deepens when I see a message from Ethan Flynn, my ProStar nemesis.

Ethan:Let’s see you spin this, bitch.

Below the crude text is a link to none other than the website that has been adamant about defaming Nathan for the past few months.

I open the link and see a huge article about his estranged mother and how she describes him as a callous and cold son, uncaring even to visit his own father on his deathbed.

“Goddamn it!” I shout, strangling my phone in my hand.

“What’s wrong? What’s happening?” Trent asks worriedly, getting up from his seat and taking the phone out of my hands to read the article.

“God, I’m stupid! I should have known that rat bastard was behind this! I’m going to kill him,” I spew, now pacing like a lunatic over Trent’s carpet.

“Easy, kitten. Put your claws away,” Trent says calmly as he continues to read every line of the article. “There’s more than one way to skin a cat, or in this case, a weasel. Though bodily harm may satisfy your bloodthirsty cravings, it won’t get you what you want.”

Even though I’m beyond enraged, I take a moment to think about it.

What do I want aside from seeing Ethan Flynn’s severed head floating on the Charles?

What do I want?

“I want him to feel what it’s like when someone else goes after his clients,” I finally say, gaining a proud smile from my man.

“And how will you do that?”
