“Best time to visit Texas is in the spring,” Rex chimes in hopefully, pulling me out of my pensive reverie. “Since you and Piper are big music lovers, you’ll be happy to learn that the best festivals happen in April. You can take your girl out to Austin or Houston for a show. My ranch in San Antonio is just a hop, skip, and jump from there.”

“Then it’s settled,” I clap. “After we bring the Eastern Conference trophy home, we’ll take a vacation to San Antonio to ensure you’re properly settled in. And then in June, you’ll come back with us to Boston since the team will expect to see you in the stands for the Stanley Cup playoffs. It wouldn’t be the same without you there.”

His eyes light up with a mixture of happiness and pride.

“You really got a good woman by your side here, kid.”

“Don’t I know it,” Trent says before pulling me by the hand until my back is flushed against his chest, wrapping his arms around me.

Rex stares at us and smiles like he couldn’t be happier for us.

“You kids find a house yet?” he asks curiously.

Trent swings me from left to right while shaking his head.

“We haven’t found anything we liked yet,” I lament. “Since Lottie lives in Beacon Hill now, I really would love to live close by. However, most of the good homes around here are either not for sale or just too expensive.”

“You do know that your boyfriend now owns almost half of the Guardians?” Rex raises an inquisitive eyebrow. “And I’m the cheapskate?”

“I know he does.” I laugh. “But I want our new home to be something we can afford. I won’t live off my man, no matter how much he moans and pouts about it.” I give Trent a little elbow in his gut.

“See what I have to deal with?” Trent chuckles.

“No, I see her point. You two are now partners and should be on an even keel on everything,” Rex advises, taking a good look around his empty living room. “May I suggest something, though? Would you be open to receiving a gift from this old man in the form of a home?” he asks, shoving his hand into his pockets and then flinging a pair of keys into the air.

Trent releases his grip on me to catch the keys, incredulously eyeing them on his open palm.

“This home has seen a lot of love here,” Rex muses, eyeing the empty walls and high ceilings. “I think it’s time it saw it again, don’t you?”

“Wait? Are you saying?” I gasp excitedly since Rex’s house is beyond beautiful.

With five bedrooms and six baths, it has more room than I could have ever hoped for. Both levels of the home are connected by a floating wood-and-steel staircase enclosed by glass. The main living area has sliding, floor-to-ceiling glass doors that open directly to a rooftop terrace, which has a jacuzzi and an infinity-edge pool. The whole house is a beacon of light and modern comfort. If I had to venture a guess, the price tag is over twenty million dollars.

I couldn’t afford such a house even after taking all of Ethan Flynn’s clients.

Well, at least not now. In a year or two, maybe.

“Are you sure about this?” Trent asks, looking just as happy as I feel.

“Why not?” Rex smiles. “It was just going to be empty since I didn’t have the heart to put it on the market. I think giving this house to both of you makes perfect sense to me. This way, I can always come back and be near my Martha again whenever I want to. That is, if you accept it, of course,” he adds expectantly.

“What do you think, love? Should we take it off the old man’s hands?” Trent asks, his eyes glimmering with hope.

“Are you kidding me?! It’s perfect!” I shriek with excitement, hugging Rex first and then jumping into Trent’s arms in utter glee.

“Good. I’ll let you crazy kids celebrate in private, then,” Rex smirks, quickly leaving the room to give us some privacy.

“Oh, my god! We have a house!” I continue to shriek in excitement.

“That we do, kitten. Are you ready to set some roots here? With me?” Trent asks, brushing my hair away from my face. He then locks my wrists behind my back so my chest is pressed against his.

“I’m more than ready,” I coo, blinking once, then twice, as I stare at this amazing man in front of me who is utterly and irrevocably mine.

“Yeah?”

“Yes,” I grin. “Let’s fill this house with our love, just like Rex said.”

“Hmm, I don’t know, kitten. You think this house is big enough to hold all that?” he teases.
