“Not a participant. Sorry.”

“Because you haven’t played with me yet.”

Callum’s wolf was chomping at the bit to indulge in the fever of the full moon as it illuminated him through the massive windows of his estate. It created an intoxicating glow upon all of his guests. Yet, he was the host, and it was his alpha duty to provide this party for the others as a safe release of pent-up energies that sometimes drove an animal to undesirable acts.

Most of the guests didn’t take it as seriously as he did, but he couldn’t help it. He’d do whatever it took to keep the packs, clans, thunders, and sleuths safe and happy.

“So, what do you say?” The woman stroked his arm.

Callum turned toward her as she batted her dark eyelashes under her mask.

“Still no. But I appreciate the offer. And I know for a fact there are plenty of shifters aching for your attention.” He stroked her jawline to ease the rejection.

She smiled. “Can’t blame me for trying. You throw a good party. Maybe next time.”

She winked before leaving with an exaggerated sway of the hips in her form-fitting, leopard-print dress.

Callum let out a stiff groan as he returned his gaze to the party below.

Everything was going smoothly. Couples were hooking up, and the forest outside the house was lit by the moon. His estate had more than enough room for them all to shift and run with no fear of being caught. It was the perfect location for a great night.

A hand suddenly clapped him on the shoulder. “How many women have you had to let down tonight?” Dan chuckled.

Sabria, Dan’s wife, came to Callum’s other side as the three stood on the mezzanine.

“I’ve lost count. How has everything been running on your end?”

“So far, so good. All the shifters have gone through the scent-blocking spray in the booth without complaint and are abiding by the rules.”

Callum was happy to have such a strong couple as his right hand. He trusted them with his life and knew they all shared the same interest … the safety of the pack.

“You two really don’t have to withhold from participating in the masquerade.”

“Oh, these couples have nothing on us. Every night is a full moon night.”

“Dan!” Sabria snapped, only causing her husband to chuckle.

He shrugged. “What? After ten years, I can still brag about my sex life. I think that’s worth mentioning.”

Sabria rolled her eyes, but Callum saw the smile she was trying to hide.

“Still, though. Thank you both.”

“Of course. We’ll check the house again and any incoming guests.” Dan dragged Sabria into a quick, passionate kiss before they split up. Callum smiled at the interaction.

“You know what? Everything is running smoothly. Why don’t you two just enjoy yourselves?”

Dan looked skeptical. “You’re going to need backup if anything goes south.”

“I can handle my pack, Dan. Go enjoy your wife.”

On the heels of a pause, Dan asked, “Are you sure?”

“Absolutely. If anything comes up, I’ll let you know.”

The couple looked at each other hungrily. Before they headed down to join the others, Sabria called over her shoulder, “You know, Call. You should take your own advice once in a while.”

He envied their love and devotion to each other. It was rare and something he didn’t see himself ever finding. His devotion was to his pack, and he was okay with that. He had too many responsibilities to be able to entertain a woman.
