“Well isn’t that why you pushed that topic of conversation so close to the damn bug?”

“Basically. They can’t dodge or damage all your cameras can they?”

“Let’s hope not. It’s a hassle to replace them.”

“Who has a spare key to your apartment?”

“Beth and Kyle. And I keep a spare key in my office.”

“Who has office access?”

“Tim.”

“That’s it?”

He nodded. “No one else has reason to be in there. I set it up that way on purpose. Tim’s keycard was programmed for access only in case of emergencies. I can’t tell you the last time he lefthis kitchen. When he needed me, he called me in there and kept working, or we went out for a beer.”

“Okay.” She pulled out her phone. “I can call in a favor about the evidence they claim was in Tim’s car.”

“Claim? Are you agreeing with me?”

“I’ve got no reason to doubt you and you obviously suspect the DEA over your own people. It bothered me that Suter and Kellerman weren’t eager to share, even if I am supposed to stay out of it.”

“Which means?”

“In my experience it means the evidence is either too good or too circumstantial.”

“But not non-existent.”

“There’s nothing solid to make me think poorly of Suter and Kellerman.”

“But?”

“It was Suter’s signature on the wiretap order,” she admitted softly.

Bart slammed his fist into the steering wheel. “They can’t possibly have cause for that order.” She didn’t reply and he didn’t need her to say it: someone had something or the order never would have been approved. “When we get back, I’m going to spend some time in the office. Whoever bugged my house has to be on the video.”

“Agreed.”

“We should find the listening station too.”

“We can try. They could be anywhere if they set up a signal booster at the first receiver.”

He should have remembered that. He made a mental note to contact Eva for an assist on the new tech and how to cope with it.

Finally the exit for Miler came into view. He wanted a change of pace from hashing over all the cards that suddenly felt stacked up against him.

At the exit, a divided highway gave way a few miles later to a picturesque Main Street leading into the town square. The deep growl of the old Camaro’s engine turned some heads as he rolled by.

He pulled into a parking space across the street from the jeweler and struggled to find the right words to prepare Hannah for this errand. She wouldn’t take a stop like this the wrong way, but he should give her enough warning to play her part.

“This is lovely,” she said as they got out of the car.

He looked around, agreeing with her. “Especially if you’re into small town charm.”

“Apparently I am.” Her smile was sincere. “Places like this are a world apart from my work in Baltimore. So why are we here? Does Tim have family in the area?”

He swallowed and just tipped his head in the direction of the corner. “This way. You’ll see.” As they crossed the street he bent his head close to hers. “It’s your turn to play along. I’m going to introduce you to a friend of mine from the area Chamber of Commerce.”
