“You got everything?”

“Just need to grab my phone.” I hurry to the kitchen, pick it up from the counter, and hold it tightly as I follow Nathan out the door.

I lock up and walk beside him to his car, feeling oddly nervous. His talking helps. I don’t have to make small talk, and after a while, I relax, even laughing at some of his funny cop stories.

“What’s the most embarrassing call you’ve ever had?” I ask him when there is a lull in the conversation.

He looks at me and grins before turning back to the road. “I’ve had a few, but I think it would be a toss-up between the man who lost a ketchup bottle up his ass and the one who got his dick stuck in the end of a vacuum.”

“Oh my God, are you serious?” I crack up, holding my stomach when it starts to cramp.

He grimaces, but his lips twitch, making me laugh harder. I laugh until tears run down my face and my jaw hurts.

“I have so many questions, but at the same time, I don’t want to know,” I gasp out.

“Would you believe me if I told you they both told me the same thing?”

“Let me guess, they tripped and fell?”

“Exactly.”

It sets me off again for a minute. “I feel sorry for the guy who actually does have a freak accident while walking naked. Not a single person will believe him when he says he tripped and fell.”

“I can’t say I know what the odds of that happening are, but you’d probably be better off buying a lottery ticket.”

I blow out a breath and nod, feeling far happier and more relaxed now.

We pull into the parking lot of the movie theater and circle it until Nathan finds an empty spot to park. I look up at the old building as Nathan climbs out and walks around to open my door. I take the hand he offers and climb out, stepping to the side so he can close the door.

“So, what are we watching?”

I don’t pull my hand free, even if part of me wonders what Valen will think. The truth is, I only have Valen’s word on things, but his actions have left me with so many questions.

“Let’s see what’s playing.”

He walks me to the ticket counter. And I stand there reading the list of movies available, but none of them ring any kind of bell.

“Why don’t you pick?” I offer.

Nathan looks from me to the list before it dawns on him. “Alright, let’s go for a comedy. We’ll take two for the Barbie movie.”

“Barbie?” I grin, watching him smirk as he pulls out his wallet and pays.

“I’m secure enough in my masculinity to watch it with you. Besides, I think you could do with a break from thrillers and horrors, right?”

“Yeah, I get enough of that in real life,” I agree as we are handed out tickets.

We head over to the concession stand and stand in line. When we reach the counter, Nathan orders a large popcorn with extra butter before turning to me. "You want anything?"

My eyes scan over all the candy. “How about a bag of peanut M&M’s?”

Nathan nods to the teenage boy behind the counter, who grabs them.

“Anything to drink?” he asks. Again, Nathan looks at me, letting me decide.

“Dr. Pepper for me.”

“Make that two,” Nathan orders before paying. He passes me the tickets and my soda before grabbing the rest.
