That sound seemed deafening to her ears.

He’d locked her in again.

Her weak knees gave way and she slumped onto the floor. Her head snaked down. Alina tried to peer beneath that little crack. She could just see the bottom of a chair. A booted foot walking. She could—

“When do we get paid?” Alina recognized the voice. It came from the man who’d threatened her with the knife.

“As soon as the boss arrives.”

“Man, did you see that freak who came after her? He got up after you hit him. That was one scary fucker.”

Midas? How badly had he been hurt?

“He’s not going to be a problem.”

Her heart squeezed in her chest.

And…the booted foot she could see suddenly turned toward the closet. Toward her. The foot rushed closer. Closer.

It slammed into the door.

She scrambled back as he laughed.

Alina hated the sound of his laughter.

Midas peered at the cabin from his perch in the woods. The bastards had made so many mistakes.

Mistake one? Leaving his ass alive. You just pissed me off. And that makes me an even worse enemy to have.

Mistake two? They’d let him track them. Too easy.

Mistake three? The idiots had a fire going. A cabin tucked away in the woods…with smoke spilling from the chimney. They might as well have waved a red flag for Midas.

They were inside, getting comfortable, while he was just waiting for his moment to strike. And that moment was—

The door to the cabin flew open. One man came rushing out. Followed immediately by the second. Light spilled from the open doorway and hit the men.

One was a redhead. One had dark hair. Brown. Both looked young. Early twenties.

The redhead yanked the door closed behind him. Hurried down the steps. The men went straight to the vehicle.

Midas had already looked inside the Benz. Empty. He’d even quietly popped the trunk, just to make sure they hadn’t left Alina in the back.

There’d been no trace of her. What he had seen in the rear of the Benz? Zip ties. Duct tape. Rope. Two knives.

He’d taken the knives and the zip ties.

The men paced around the car.

“You shouldn’t have threatened to slice her face,” one said.

Midas stiffened.

“The bitch was trying to break down the door.” The jerk lit a cigarette.
